PS Pump Pulley

I recently bought a 2000 Sierra K1500 Z71 5.3L, and it has started a gawd-awful belt chirping mostly during cold starts. The noise dies down after the engine has warmed up, and sometimes I don't hear anything at all.

 

I am replacing the belt and tensioner this weekend, but I have heard that the PS pump pulley can move off it's position on the shaft and cause the same thing. Can you tell me how the pulley should be aligned with the shaft (flush or measured offset)? The truck has 116,000 miles.

The hub part of the pulley is *supposed* to be flush with the end of the pump shaft; however, that's not always the ideal position.

 

I don't believe the pulley can walk to a different position on its own. That sucker is on there pretty tight.

 

P.S. pulleys have been our biggest problem when it comes to the type of belt noise you're talking about. If the pulley is not flush, make it so, if it is flush, you may have to move it in or out a bit. A "bit" is defined as about 3 mm at a time.
