instrument panel lights

'98 1500 Silverado Z71, 99K miles (white, extra cab, aftermarket CD Player)

 

I just bought the truck, so its history is a mystery.

 

You have to turn the manual headlight switch on for the instrument panel lights to come on...they don't light up automatically with the auto-on headlights (or at dark, or whenever they're supposed to come on).

 

As far as I can tell, all other inside/outside lights work perfectly.

Haven't paid much attention to a '98 lately, but I don't think it has "auto on" headlights.

RT8 I think you are referring to your day time running lights. They use the headlight bulb but at a lower voltage so are dimmer than the regular headlights. Press in your emergency brake, if they turn off than you are talking about the DRLs. If so the dash lights will not come on. This is so you don't forget to turn on your main lights when it gets dark.

My base '98 Isuzu (an S10 in drag) had automatic headlights. The headlight control knob looked just like the one on my '06 Sierra.

Ok, yeah, that. I crank the truck and the lights come on automatically. I hadn't realized that they weren't as bright that way as they are if I actually turn them on manually. Ok, so nothing's broke, thanks guys!

A '98 S-10 (or isuzu) cannot be compared to a '98 full size truck.
