getting the codes

My "new" 98 K3500 C/C has developed an intermittent SES light issue. Pretty sure it's related to fuel, but want to check the code anyway. Which terminals do I jump and what's the procedure for reading the code?

On my 94 it's just jump two terminals and turn the key on, then count the flashes on the SES light. Is the 98 the same? Thanks!

Your 98 is OBD-II (all 96 vehicles and newer are OBD-II) and you can no longer jumper two terminals to get the codes. You need an OBD-II code reader or scanner.

I have heard that Autozone will do it for free but I have not tried that.

Ah nuts! I'll call autozone later and check. Thanks!!

I've had better look going to my local garage and having them pull the code. If you have a relationship with one it may be free. I had Autozone pull codes and they gave me incorrect information. If you go to Autozone, get the code from the reader and double check the meaning.

I just remembered that I can take it to the auto hobby shop on base (USAF) and they'll read the codes for free. I think that's what I'll do. The truck is still running just fine, and the light just seems to go on and off at random. I'll let y'all know what I find.

Update: The codes came back a P0172 and P0175, Left and right banks both running rich. So, I'm thinking it's either some injectors leaking/not shutting off completely or the new fuel pressure regulator is leaking.

I bought a fuel pressure guage, but haven't had a chance to use it yet. I go back out to work Sunday and won't make it home until Thursday, so any more diagnosis will have to wait until then......

Sounds exactly what mine is doing and same codes still havent found problem and have changed all kinds of things nothing so far has fixed problem.Only thing left is the mas air flow sensor

Well, the wife drove the truck around this week a few times while I was at work, and I drove it a while today. No SES light, so maybe the fix worked. I bought a couple bottles of Lucas Oil fuel injector cleaner and am running them through the system. Time will tell. Tomorrow I'm gonna hook the fuel pressure gauge up and do a good pressure/leak test.
