when I launch,

When I "launch" , TRY to peel out with my truck, the rear tires seem to take turns grabbing traction. Is this normal. Gonna break? I don't do this often but I recently had to put smaller tires on (don't ask) so the rear end seemed to lock up more often. I realize the bigger mud tires absorbed more of the tire spin and lost rubber, but the smaller tires just make noise an leave marks on the pavement. Well I noticed the rear axle seems to spin one tire at a time. Not always, but with the smaller tires it's really noticeable. It switches back and forth every 1/2 second during full acceleration. Is it working properly? The road were a little wet today, and I didn't have my usual weight in the bed.

Just another worry-some question from that d**n 6.slow...

Does that have a G80 locker/limited slip?

yup. about 70,000 miles on it. Do these wear out about any certain time. I bought it used about 10,000 miles ago. Temporary running 265's, but usually running 285 MT's.

I've seen the same thing watching 3 GM half-ton trucks do burnouts at the strip. One wheel gets to smoking and then stops as the other starts to rip. As for what my truck will do, a 3/4 with G80, it will spin both until the ECM gets P/Oed and turns on reduced power. It didn't help my ET's any so that's the last time I've ever done it. I've had people say when I pull out WOT the rear end is going sideways. Mines at 60K. I don't put it to the test, especially on wet pavement. Shock loads break/wear out heavy parts.

These G80's can do that if someone changed the diff oil and didn't use the correct GL5 rated oil which has the friction modifiers for limited slip. The G80 has clutches on each side and works as a limited slip as well as a locker. Without the friction modifier the clutches will slip too much. Change the rear diff fluid to any GL5 rated synthetic, or add a bottle of posi lube and you should be smoken em more evenly!

Certaintly try that first, next would be take a look inside for broken or worn parts!

I hope I have the one that is limited slip before it locks. My 97 G80 was an open dif before it locked. There is confusion between Eaton web sites.

this site says it is an open dif before lock up and your site says it is a limited slip before lockup. I wonder which I have in my 04. I jack up both wheels and they spin the opposite way which would indicate an open dif a limited slip would spin both the same.
