Fog Lights

I apologize if this is a repost, but I couldn't find the info I needed in a search.

I drive through areas that are typically foggy at night and decided to get a set of GM fog lights for my truck (00 z71). I got a great deal on the entire kit (all GM stuff made in Canada) it came with the lights, wireing harness, brackets, bolts and correct dash switch. It also had directions that said I needed to reprogram the computer to accept the lights??? Is this something I have to take to a dealer to do? I've reprogrammed a new set of key fobbs on my truck recently, is this anything like that?

If I have to bring it to a dealer, what have others been charged? (I will have everything already installed)

It is my understanding that for trucks prior to 2003 you have to see the dealer to have the BCM programmed. Depending on the dealer is can be anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour labor.

All the dealer has to do is hook up the TechII and tell the BCM something to make them work.

Thanks for the input, that's what I thought. It figures. I save money gettin them off ebay, then I have to go spend my savings paying someone to spend 2 minutes with a computer to make them work.

Oh well, anyone know this for a fact?

I installed the same kit on my buddy's 02 and he had to bring it in to the dealer afterwards, I think they charged around $40 to program it.

And it is really frustrating that GM deleted standard foglights on LT1 '06 Z71 Silverado. All LS and LTs had them standard for the '05 year and some years prior to that.

You can also bypass the BCM and wire them direct from the stock switch to a relay and then to the lamps. Only extra cost is a relay and some extra wire.

Could you give me some more specific directions on how to do this? Do I need to cut/feed wires under the dash? What wire to do I need to splice? What kinda of relay, where can I get one? I already have everything hooked up and plugged in, I just hate the idea of paying more to make them work (already paid 70 bucks for the kit.) I'd really appreciate your help. (I like to do things myself, I just bought a ton of parts for my '67 to get 'er ready for this summer )

I know they work I accidentally hooked them up backwards in the BCM and they turned on/off with my headlights. Ooops.

Get a regular 30A Hella type relay. You can find these almost anywhere.

The relay has 4 prongs: One is for BIG power IN

One is for BIG power OUT

One is for SMALL power IN

One is for ground

The back side of the relays usually all have diagrams engraved reflecting this.

Cut the power wires going to the fog lamps and splice these and hook up to the relay prong which has BIG power going out. Tie into a power source and hook this wire to the BIG power in prong. Make sure to fuse this wire at the source. Ground the other prong to the vehicle. Also splice the ground wires for the lamps and run them to a ground on the frame or body.

You'll need a wiring diagram to figure out which connections are for what at the switch and which wire is ground and hot at the lamps themselves.

Again for the switch run a few wires up for power (make sure to fuse) and ground and one going to the relay for the SMALL power IN prong. For the switch you will need to get the factory connector to make things easier for hookup
