Extended Warranty

This is somehow repair related. I'm looking to buy an extended warranty for my 2004 (32K miles) Z71. Chevy dealer recommended Fidelity Extended Warranty Platinum for $1600 (6yr/100K miles). I wanted to get the GM Protection Plan, but the dealer rep said it was not worth it and they didn't carry it anymore.

Have you heard anything about this company? Is that a good price?

Thanks!

Save your money and put it in a high yield savings account. Just IMHO, but I don't think extended warranties are a good deal for anyone but the yahoos selling them. Just way too much fine print that they can deny a claim with.

i have the GMPP - bought the ext. warranty due to the high mileage driving I was doing to my previous job. Had been to the dealer on several occassions and I felt it was worth the money (after all I'm paying the truck off ... I don't need to keep paying for repairs).

Read everything carefully - especially what's not covered. I bought it with the intent to use it on really expensive repairs: 4WD, Engine, trans, PCM/BCM.

To date I have not used it (probably just jinxed myself).

Dpending on the GMPP you get, it literally is an extension of your factory warranty. Do some research, one of those is probably your best bet if you must get one.

also I'm not here to sell you a warranty, all I do is administer the warranty when there is a problem

I went ahead with Auto Service Warranty. I got a good deal for a 7 months/125K miles Factory plus coverage (same as GMPP-Major Guard). The cost was $1399.

Did some research and the company has been in service for a while, they handle their own claims directly and Better Business Bureu didn't have any negative feedback.

Hopefully the truck doesn't give me any problems in the future, but if it does I know I'm covered. Consumer Report just had their annual vehicle review coverage and listed the Chevy Silverado's reliability as "below average."

Thanks for all of your advice!

How easy/difficult is to file a claim? Any problems filing claims? I saw a lot of discontent with Fidelity on the internet. For example: "that the claim was denied due to improper maintainence. Sludge was found in the oil pan, and it was determined that I did not change my oil regularly." The individual had all the maintenace records and oil was changed regularly on his vehicle. There are also a "more than usual" number of complaints with the BBB.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated...I'm still looking for the best deal for my $$.

I you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay?  I went to the site and their quote for 84mo/70K miles was $3,545.00.

Compare to fidelity ("almost" same coverage) it's almost twice as much.

I can't remember exactly, but I have the 6 yr/100k major guard with the $100 deductible, and if i recall correctly it was ~$2100, but that was almost 2 years ago so my memory is fuzzy.

on a cliam like that i was not denied due to lack of maintenace, it was due to lack of lube, which on some engines (dodge 2.7L, toyoya 2.2L, suzuki 2.0L) they have a bad problem about sludge in the oil pan, and when it sludges up it blocks off oil flow to the engine thus cuaseing then engine bearing to burn up and locking the motor. in all truth on these engines you can change to oil every 2000 miles and it will still happen....

looking at all the claim we due a year about 5 million you will have people out there that will not be staisfied and voice their opinion on the BBB and Ripoffreport.com...which they have the right to due, but most that do post on these sites dont understand why it was denied, just that it was and it's not there fault

fidelity warranty is the largest warranty company in the us...all claim paid is our money. we also administer vw real driver, audi pure protection, lotus of america, South East Toyota and we own other compainies were not small at all...

and on filing a claim it can very, some claims can take 5 mins to do, some require we send out an inspector to verify what the shop is telling us, usally claims over $1000 and during inspections we do cover for rental car

GM is probably the best of most.

The dealer is "pushing" a high profit margin warranty. Only plus if it is actually underwritten by Fidelity Insurance and there is a waiver to the $50 or whatever copay by servicing at the dealer that issued the warranty.

Bottomline it needs to cover/provide

Rental car (although this is usually a little Kia)

Towing (unless you have roadside from some other source)

Long distance Trip interruption (same exclu as towing)

Full HVAC

Base electrical, windows, locks, all computers

Transmission

engine on internal failures

HVAC or tranny failures will pay for the extended 7year/100K mile warranty

WarrantyByNet

AAAutoWarranty

Current insurance company may offer

GMPP is the only way to go. Don't waste your money on an aftermarket policy. Even the best of the best don't touch a GMPP's coverage.

As for the dealer not carrying it anymore... B.S. I doubt that they can not carry it. As someone mentioned here, they want to sell the aftermarket policy because the profit margin for the dealer and the finance guy is MUCH higher.

GM-Tech is correct GMPP does cover "a few more things" than Fidelity's Platnum plan, but Fidelity plan does cover a few things that GMPP doesn't, both are about the same, except the price GMPP cost more
