Axle Diffs Lube amount

Hi-

 

I'm getting ready to change the lube in my front and rear diffs, and my transfer case. The tech article for the transfer case mentions about 2 quarts, slightly less, to do the job.

 

But the articles for the front and rear don't mention how much is needed. Can someone tell me how much to have on hand? I'm using the regular 80w-90 for the front, and the synthetic 75w-90 for the rear. The transfer case uses AutoTrak-II fluid.

3 total for the rear (about 2.25qts) and 2 for the front (about 1.5 if I recall correctly). 2 Qts should be enough for the tcase. I just use Mobil 1 front and rear and have had no leaking issues in 161K miles.

Thanks. The front bottles are smaller, only 23 oz, vs 32. So you think it (front) doesn't need 2 quarts, but rather, 2 bottles? I'll probably just order 3 for the front, the 80w-90 stuff is cheap enough.

What? Only 2.25 quarts to fill up the rear differential in a full size truck? My 95 Nissan 4X4 SE V6 compact truck rear differential took 3.0 quarts of 80W90 gear oil to refill after draining. Adequate differential oil capacity is very important to prevent differential overheating when trailering or off-roading.

 

2.25 quart differential oil capacity in a full size truck is a joke.

Well, I'll have 3 full quarts on hand for the rear. It's synthetic, so not cheap at around $18/bottle. We'll see.

What brand of synthetic oil are you using? I recently bought Redline synthetic gear oil, which is considered by many experts to be one of the best gear oil available, for about $ 8 a quart. $18 a quart sounds like something from a GM dealer.

Redline is a good oil, another good oil for your diffs is Amsoil Severe Gear which comes in 75W-90 and 75W-140.

Funny, I've got over 162K on my truck with about 30K of that towing about 4500lbs and I've yet to have any rear diff issues. Not bad for a joke if you ask me

It is GM fluid. I just ordered a bunch of stuff from PartsZone. It was easier than tracking everything down.

Seems that noone knows for sure though, how much. I'd hate to end up short, as I won't be abel to drive the vehicle to the dealer if I am.

Trust me, 3 qts is enough for the rear and Mobil 1 is $8 per qt.. I've done it 4 times so far on my Tahoe.

Try towing 8000 lbs all day for about 30k miles, then brag about that differential.

3.5 pints for the front diff ( 8.25" ring gear )

3.7 pints for the front diff ( 9.25" ring gear )

 

Rear:

 

8.6" ring gear 4.8 pints

9.5" and 10.5" 5.5 pints

11.5" ring gear 7.7 pints
