Which one should I get for my 1995 GMC Sonoma? I have had the service engine soon light come on and I tried an auto X ray 1000 and it won't communicate with the ECM. Local mechanic tried his $8000.00 code reader and same thing. It has the 16 pin ODB 2 plug, but I heard 1995 was the middle year of ODB 1 & 2. Anyway, I need to lose this service engine light!!!

Last time it was the EGR. How does a bad EGR trip the ECM to sending out a code?

I hear ya. I work at an auto parts store and the other day i decided to throw the scanner we have there on my 1995 sonoma and it kept reading fail....Theres no check engine light on my dash lit but the scanner should read no codes found. Fail means it cant even scan. So im thinking maybe theres a loose wire in there but who knows.

I've got a 95 Jimmy and I went around and around and around trying to find the right code reader, I tried lots of them and sent out many emails. The 95 has an OBDII connector but it is not fully OBDII compliant, which reastes a real mess when trying to find a reader that will work.

Most of the O'Reilly Auto Parts stores, here in the Mid-West, will loan you a reader that will work with a 95 Jimmy. I got tired of going back and forth and finally just bought an AutoXRay Ez-Read 2000 for about $200.

The 2000 has OBDI & OBDII connectors for GM, Ford, & Dodge and a Generic OBDII connector, so it can read everything except the newest cars that are going to a different system.

The mistake I have made more than once is that you cannot use the GM OBDII connector to read the 95's, you have to use the Generic OBDII connector. The reader will allow you to enter the make, model, and VIN code into the reader but it will fail to read the data. For the Make of vehicle, you enter Generic OBDII.

Hope it helps,
