i just got a 2000 sierra. its a z71 slt. its nice but a lot more truck then i had in mind when i strated looking for a new vehicle. but after a whole day of not finding anything that i liked this one was pretty close to what i wanted and actually nicer. its got 70300 miles and all the other options that come with z71 and slt. i paid 12250 for it. is that a good price? it took quit a bit of negotiating to get there. anyway on the way home the service 4x4 light came on. is this something that typically would need serviceing at this mileage? what could be some of the problems? i havent even been able to call the dealership cause they were cloesd by the time i got home.

It could be a service item w/ the four wheel drive, (do you have any of the maintenance history on the truck?) but a very common problem with the 99+ trucks is the switch for the 4X4 often goes bad. Very simple if this is the problem. Since you only bought the truck I'd see if the dealership couldn't take care of this for me. Search around in the forums, this switch failure is one of the most common problems encounted by GM 4X4 owners. This is the most likely culprit.

BTW: Welcome to the fourms. Hope you'll feel at home.

thanks,

it actually says "service 4 wheel drive". it seems to come on after driving a little while. the test drive was about 10 minutes, so it probally comes on after about 11 minutes of driving.

i gotta take it back up there monday after work so they can clean it up some. i took it home b4 it got detailed cause i need to get to work mon. hope they can look at it then.

I bet if you replace the switch you want be seeing the warning message anymore, I learned the hard way, replace the switch first before going to the dealers and you will save lots of money.

Most likely the switch assuming, of course, he got the AutoTrac and not the lever on the floor.

got the autotrac.

i talked to the dealer and he said they would take a look at it, and probally fix it if it wasnt too much. i said you should fix it no matter what and he said, well lets just get a look at it first. so thats where its at.

how much is parts and labor usally for this? can i do it myself?

Hopefully it is just the switch, but I bet seeing that light come on while you were on the way home from the dealer made you sick.

GM list price is around $62.00 and on GMPartsDirect it's about $36.00.

It is very easy to replace, been there, done that.

Get her checked out. Wife's 03 Burban had same message...took in under warranty and it was something in transfer case. Had to replace $300 part...but under warranty! :D

Is P/N 15709327 for all years? I just ordered that part but I have a 2000. Is this the right item for me? Thanks

15709327 is for '99-'02 trucks,15136039 is for the '03-up trucks with the AutoTrac option (RPO Code NP8)

It could also be that the fluid is low in say the transfer case. That's what caused the message to pop on for me. Thats a simple fix.

Thanks MS3DALE. I have a 2000 and ordered 15709327 so looks like I'm good. My 4x4 seems to work fine at times but I get that light a lot and sometimes my 2wheel drive light isn't on at all so hopefully this is my problem.
