Got my NASTA nerfs today...

Gonna bolt them up on my '06 Tahoe. I read somewhere about the installation instructions being fairly vauge. I'm sure they are simple to install, but just for fun would still like to hear any info from folks who have installed them.

Thanks

Ok, no problem there.

They are great nerf bars. Mine bolted up using only the stock body mount brakets. Very easy install. Good luck.

Make sure you bolt them on the right side. LOL I put mine on backwards. Not sure if yours is different. On the extended cab trucks if you use the middle support you cant flip floppy them.

Glad to see another Nasta owner on the board. The install was very simple on my Crew . If I remember correctly there's a torx screw involved in the middle support (I may be daydreaming here its been a year and a half) that was hard to get tight enough. I wish you the best with these nerfs. I've been nothing less than satisfied.

vroten

Who did you get them from and at what price?

I got them from http://store.trexmotorsports.com/ for $263.99 shipped to my door.

I'm pretty happy with them. They were super easy to install. I don't have any center brace on mine and they seem fairly sturdy.

My only complaint is with the mounting bracket on the driver's rear mount. This is the only bracket that the bolt hole didn't really align that great. As such it would not allow for any adjustment (in/out) at that end. They also included bolts that do not work on the '06 cabs. I had to use the stock bolts which are bigger. I called TRex on this and they confirmed. In fact, they are having the correct bolts shipped to me free of charge even though I don't really need them. I think I may call and ask if there is a redesigned bracket that fits better for the '06 models.

I wish I read your post carefully before I ordered mine. The bolts they supplied for replacing the OEM body mount bolts are wrong size: M12 instead of M14.

Furthermore the original body mount bolts are M14 metric bolts, designated as 10.9, which is grade 8 equivalent 150 ksi high strength bolt. You do not want to replace these with stainless steel bolts, which are much weaker. Why did they have to use flanged head aluminized metric bolts for body mount bolts on this truck? With SAE bolts, it would not be that big of a deal to find longer bolts, but try finding these? I only could find fully threaded M14x2 130 mm long plain black finish class 8.8 (grade 5 equivalent) bolts. No luck finding partially threaded, cadmium plated or aluminized M14x2x130mm class 10.9 hex bolts. McMaster Carr or Grainger do not have the either. WTF? What am I to do now? I can use the original body bolts with the end brackets, but the center bracket requires an additional 1/4 inch spacer, so a longer bolt is required. Who the heck did the engineering on these bars? Don't they understand the concept of high strength bolt?

This really irritates me. As I said before, I am slowly finding out that mounting accessories on this truck is a PITA as best. I wonder if should get the GM bars instead. They probably supply the correct hardware with theirs.

Hey pm26, call TRex back (assuming that's where you bought em') and ask for Nate. They will send you the correct bolts. It is my understanding the bolts were a change for the '06 models and some of the older Nasta kits don't have the upgraded bolts.

TRex sent mine free of charge even though I won't be using them. Sure is a bummer though for you. I didn't have a center brace to worry about.

No, I did not order them from these people, but I can surely call my supplier and ask for updated bolts. However, as I already mentioned, they should not be substituting much weaker stainless bolts for heat treated grade 8 bolts. Manufacturers (especially cost conscious ones like GM) use grade 8 bolts only where they are needed, believe me.

It is a bummer that we have two sets of fasteners in this country and that more and more metric bolts are used in today's new cars and trucks. If this was in Europe, finding DIN spec correct metric bolts of any size would be no problem.

I wonder if they supply longer bolts with the GM nerf bars. I'll call a GM dealer and see if I can buy the hardware kit for those bars. This may be the best way out.

Here is the update:

The GM OEM bars do not come with longer body mount bolts. They use the existing M14 x 2.0 x 120 mm grade 10.9 bolts. One local dealer had a hardware kit for the OEM step bars and the kit did not contain the body mount bolts. It was $ 35 for just a few short bolts and spacers and did not even contain the brackets.

I called Nasta directly and was told that for the '06 models you simply reuse the existing body mount bolts as they are plenty long to fully thread in. You do not use the supplied center bracket spacers. I mounted the bars on today and they look very good. Installation was staightforward and easy.

I left the rubber caps on the ends of bars on when I bolted them onto the brackets. Are these supposed to be removed before the bars are bolted on?
