lux....non-lux bose system

Recommended Posts

i hear people on here talking about different bose systems lux and non lux. What does this mean? How do you know which one you have?

really what it comes down to is which Bose Amp you have in stalled. Y91 or Y92 are the lux amp and UQ7 is the non-lux amp. Look at the codes in your glove box to determine which one you have. Otherwise the amp is located in the center counsel if you want to look to make sure. The two amps are visually different and sound way different when installed

Just wondering.....if i have the non-lux could i put in a lux? would it be a direct fit and are the wiring harnesses the same? I figure its a long shot but i am a little dissapointed in the system, not sure it deserves to say Bose.

Yes, the NON lux can be upgraded to the LUX.. I did the conversion and added a TNR (touch screen anv). If you wanna do this, I can get you all the wiring diagrams. I have a BOOK of documentation including pictures.

BUt...this conversion isn't for the faint of heart. You will need to redistribute all the wires on each plug. The Lux amp also uses the data cable, so you will need that (read '04 and newer).

You're discovering what a lot of us have.

Bose sucks. It's absolutely horrible to anybody with 1/2 an ear for sound. "No highs, no lows? MUST be Bose."

I'm currently plotting ways of getting around the B(L)ose crap in the new ride. It sounds horrible compared to the two I got rid of.

All I wanna do is a roomy-zoom-zoom and a boom-boom.

I have a 04 tahoe with the bose system (non LUX). Can I just buy the Y91/92 LUX amp and then install the Nav unit (with LUX)? Are the Nav systems capabilities different with LUX and non LUX?

Thanks

Carl

Yes, you can change to a LUX amp and a LUX head unit and the system will work AFTER you change the PIN connections on the plug that goes into the amp--It is not difficult, but takes some time and patience--The NAV operations are the same for both LUX and NON-LUX--The difference is in the sound--I recommend also upgrading to a six-disc changer from a Denali or Escalade--When using the navigation, you cannot play a CD because the Nav CD must be inserted--(If you do not have a navigation system from the factory, you will also have to install the antenna under the dash--The whole dash cover has to be removed to do it correctly)

Can you put a lux amp and lux head in a non-GM vehicle or are there other associated bits.

I found a 03 Yukon Nav unit locally and bought it for a project I'm working on, but I didn't read up on GM audio systems first. I guess I can't throw this thing on a motorcycle frown.gif

Does anyone know if the non-Lux version can be used without having all the GM bits?

Can I just get a LUX amp or will I need anything else?

Thanks for your help.

If there is no way to make it work, Is anyone looking for the LUX version p/n 15204335.

I find this discussion interesting. I haver been installing stereos in vehicles for 30 years, started back in the days of 8-tracks, and over that time, I have done some pretty nice work (no body else around to toot my horn). I am not talking about stuff that is going to win awards or anything but nice matched components, great sound and with relatively little visual impact. Most systems under $5,000. When I purchased my truck, I was, and still am impressed with the sound from my Bose system. For a stock stereo in a truck, it is one of the nicest I heard. And, the best part is, I didn't have to do a thing except turn the key! Now, I'll give you that it could be improved upon, and maybe you fellas are deep into sound, which I can really appreciate, but don't you think these systems sound pretty good for stock?

Also, I looked up my RPO codes. It appears I have the non-lux amp (UQ7). So far no-one has answered the very first question. What is the difference between LUX and non-LUX. Only thing I haver gathered from this thread is that LUX is preferred. Any takers?

Ok, a rough guess is, on the non-lux the HU has an amp which send to the non-lux amp which boosts the sound. The lux HU just sends the data and the Lux amp boosts that. I probably said that all wrong, but its along those lines.

Can someone help me? I have a 03 tahoe Bose non-lux(UQ7). I have a touch screen Nav from a 06(15800001) Bose LUX. What do I have to change to make this work? Or should I just sell it and get the non-lux (15800000) head unit. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • I would have to read back to get a better picture in my mind of some of the other comments and what they were using for a driving scenario they based the fuel mileage off of. That is why the fuel mileage conversation is extremely difficult to make fair comparisons from. If I was to be living in town and only driving around town, light to light and some longer stretches that doesn't have a light every block, and the usual stop at a grocery store and the bank and so on and so forth, my fuel mileage even during the summer time would be so bad with my truck I don't even want to know how bad it would be !. Then add in winter time and idling to warm it up to clear the windows and driving through snowy streets etc, large heavy trucks with gas engines have NEVER been worth crap for fuel mileage and why some little pot licker of a car with wheelbarrow tires and a 1300 cc four cylinder non turbo engine was the ticket to using a mere fraction of the fuel over a full size pickup.    By the way my truck has the 34" tires as its a HC but not the BFG KO3 tires ( that was an option for my truck but the sales guy couldn't figure out what the tires actually were so that never got on the order until it was too late to change the truck order ). So what fuel mileage your getting actually sounds good for "town driving" and with my truck when I go to town the fuel mileage keeps increasing as I get closer to town because it takes quite a while to get the driveline oils warmed up ( and why it always shows better fuel mileage on the return trip from town because its already warmed up ) but once I am in town that fuel mileage average just keeps dropping the more I mess around town and then has to recover back to something reasonable again by the time I get home for an over all average.    I'd be curious what your sticker says for the factory weight of your truck, mine is close around that 7700 lb due to the options it has. But anyway the long and short is, vehicle weight, higher rolling resistance heavy tires and a hefty driveline and a relatively large gas engine make for crap fuel mileage in stop and go scenarios, all one can do is drive it easy off the line at each stop and as my dad had said over the years, drive like a raw egg is under your foot and that's the best one can do. Years back with a carbed engine and if the carb was getting a bit out of tune etc as would the ignition system, the fuel mileage on pickups with larger engines was just awful compared to what your getting. We pay the fuel price penalty for driving HD trucks over some little vehicle, that is the reality.
    • We had two Toyota’s with that engine in the mid 80s. We had 50 gallon fuel tanks, a toolbox full of tools, an air compressor and assorted parts for our equipment. We beat those up and down pipeline ROWs until we started buying diesel trucks. Then they became parts runners and first vehicles for our teenagers first cars. Our shop Forman wrecked them both two years apart when we hired him out of high school as an apprentice. Good thing he’s an excellent mechanic. It took awhile before he could be called a good driver.
    • I have a 2025 GMC Canyon Denali.   On a trip recently the engine failed.  The dealership diagnosed a bent valve and says there is a service bulletin that indicates to 'relace the engine'.  The truck only has about 14K miles and is under warranty.   The failure occurred 5/11/2026.   So far I have worked with GM Customer Assistance and Roadside Assistance.  Evidently no engines are available and nobody will offer a date when a new one will be.   Coming up on two months with no repair or timeline and no loaner from the dealership.   GMC Customer Assistance is 'ghosting' me and keeps closing the cases I've opened with no resolution.   Hoping someone can help me on how to escalate this issue.
