Recommended Posts

heres a question ive been wondering about..

im set on getting a z71 truck.. but i also want to lift it. Am i wasting my money on the Z71 package if im going to swap out the suspension anyways?

are there pros and cons to buying a z71 vs a standard 4x4?

thanks so much.

If you plan on lifting it the only part of the Z-71 package that you'll end up keeping is the skidplates...which may or may not be cheaper to buy seperately...you'd have to get a price from the parts dept. then compare to the price of the Z-71 package.

I bought the 4X4 version (Sierra) and mine came with skid plates and just about everything else as the Z71. I like the 4X4 because I wanted the manual shifter (non autotrac). I'm not sure but I think the Z71 comes factory with the autotrac 4X4. I didn't need the Bilstein shocks either cause I replaced mine with ProComp anyway. Basically it's up to you and what you want. IMO, if you like the stickers, buy the Z71. If not, save a little $$$ to add to your 4X4 and buy that one. JMO though. :shakehead:

Hope that helped a little.

For '06, only crew cab Z71s come standard with the Autotrac transfer case. All other Z71s have a manual shift transfer case standard, Autotrack optional. I cannot say that I am happy about that as I wanted the crew cab Z71 and a manual transfer case, but I had no choice.

For '05 the Autotrac was not standard on the regular cab truck. The Z-71 package also includes fender flares for '05 and I assume for '06 as well. I may be wrong but I think alloy wheels are also part of the package, as well as heavier tranny cooling. I ended up with the plow prep groug and trailer package, so I know I have all that there is to have in the cooling department.

I dont know why you guys are bashing on the auto trac feature..personally i think it works great!

It surely works great IF and WHEN it works. The issue is, these Autotrac cases are more prone to failures as there is a larger number of electronic/electrical components. And they are very expensive to fix if the failed component happens to be a major one. I had a manual transfer case on all other trucks before this one and never has any problem with any of them.

I read quite a few stories where Autotrac owners got stranded in the middle of nowhere due to malfunctioning switch, encoder motor, or some other ocmponents failure. This transfer case did not earn its nickname "Autocrap" transfer case for no reason.
