piston slap

I have a 2000 Chevy Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L engine. I bought it used and about 2 weeks after I bought it the engine started knocking on cold weather start ups. A dealer service advisor told me that it was a normal problem. I'm a mechanic and I'm having trouble believing it.

In order to mask the slap condition temporarily, selling dealers will use stuff like top engine cleaner to get rid of carbon on piston skirts to eliminate the slap. Few weeks after the truck is bought and more carbon builds up, the slapping noise appears again. What a dirty way to sell a slapping vehicle at a full price!

I have seen people complain about it up to 175,000. Failure is very doubtful. I can understand your concern and it would probably bother me also, but I would not get rid of the truck just because of that. IMHO
