Can you put stacks on a gas truck. I am asking this question for my buddy who wants to put stacks on his truck and i figured this is the best place to ask. He wants 5in. and any help will be appreciated.

One problem you'll face is backpressure...more specifically, the lack of backpressure.

 

GM puts a different exhaust pipe diameter on certain engines in order to tune them so they'll have low end torque. If you put a 3" pipe on a 5 liter, it won't have any low end. But if you put a 3" pipe on a 8.1 liter, it'll probably be about right.

 

A pair of 5" "stacks" might look cool, but making a mod like that might ruin your low end. I don't know if it would make sense, but it might be possible to put the right size pipe and mufflers inside the 5" stacks...

It is possible, the cats would be under the truck and the muffler(s) would be in the stacks or in the center of the bed with pipes coming out and up each end. But like mmmikkke said.............backpressure. Dual 5" are crazy unless your buddy is running a diesel.

no hes running the 5.3. i had a feeling that the 5 inch would be alil to radical but im gonna let him know about the 5in over the muffler or whatever. Any more ideas...

What is the opinion about running 4.25" stacks on the 6.0. I'm not tyring to take the subject away from badrock, but why start another post? Anyway, I've got the 6.0 and I figured the cats underneath would be enough back pressure. Am I wrong? It wouldn't be tough to throw some mufflers on each side, but I need some other opinions on the matter. Thanks! J

Also, should I not be putting pipes on a gasser? I think they look great if they're done right, but I don't have the diesel. Any thoughts?

if really really wanted stacks what he could do is run a turndown/s off of the motor under the truck and keep them hidden so no one could see the exhaust unless they got under the truck. Then run dummy stacks. Most wouldnt know any different but if he does run stacks like previously stated hes gonna lose alot of bottom end.

or you could run a regular size exhaust inside the stacks...take a little more work but would keep the back pressure.

Odds are it will be a pain to start also. I've got dual 3 inch pipes with straight through mufflers and 3 1/2 inch tips on my 6.0, and when the motor is cold I have to crank on it a little longer before it will fire. I was suprised, it just started doing it when it got warm out, but it makes sense to me because cold air is much denser, so it would fire easier..
