Vernon,

 

I noticed in your signature that you were getting the whipple and going to install a DMax intercooler. Is that still in the works for you? Right now, intercooling is a big concern for me as summer is coming. I cant bring myself to dish out the $2000 Whipple wants for their air to water kit. Seeing as how we already have the HD body, a DMax intercooler seems like a great idea, and the huge amount of air coverage of that intercooler would be great for heat dissipation. Not to mention those I/C's are set up to handle 28+psi which is more than twice as much as i would ever be sending through it. I have researched this avenue ad nauseam and cant find a definative answer to whether it will actually work or not. Looks like some of the coolers will need to come off of the radiator to install the intercooler and some piping will be in order as well. Have you done any research on this or have any insight as to the how easy or difficult the install would be? This would be a very practicle way to intercool the whipple in an HD if we can make it work.

Yeah I'll do it, one of these days. It's definately less costly and probably more effective than the Whipple intercooler. I've got so many exotic/prodject type vehicles that things move slowly. If my truck was broken or really slow I'd probably have more enthusiasm. Gas prices aren't helping matters. I've already obtained the Whipple kit, intercooler (it's big), throttle, timing chain, and the heads. I think I've ran out of what Ebay can supply me in a timely manner. I still need a cam and headers. I've been contemplating a piston cooling oil jet system that would guarantee long engine life and might allow low octane fuel with moderate boost but that would require a complete tear-down. When I do this it will be all at once so down time will be minimized. The truck is our main family hauler until I get one of my Supercoupes back on the road. I've got three kids. I'm shooting for installing my 4.56 gears next.

 

I've got the shop manual set and done some reasearch here there and under the hood. The intercooler mounts to the back of the diesel radiator which fits just as nice as the stock 8.1 radiator in an 8.1 truck. The 8.1 oil cooler would have to be made stand alone. The fan shroud and fan are different but I'm not sure how much yet. The DM shroud isn't as deep. I've moved my main battery over to the auxillary positon to make room for the TCM/ECM in it's place. This frees up some room for tubing and notibly helps handling. Tubing would have to be fabricated but not complex. I'm also wanting to tie in the cowl induction hood as an actual air intake since the throttle body will be sitting right there.

 

So if you persue it you could easily beat me to the finish. So far it looks pretty simple as long as you have the IC, Rad, and Fan/Shroud. If there's any specific question you may have I'll be glad to help. One thing I've been wondering about is how to plumb an aftermarket oil cooler to the truck.

So i would need the DMax radiator, I/C and maybe the fan shroud? Is the DMax core support the same?

 

I am going to have to pull some pictures of the DMax setup to understand exactly whats involved. You mean the Dmax radiator has no built in oil cooler? It would seem like there must be a way to attach this Dmax intercooler to the existing radiator somehow and make it work. Possibly on the outside of the core support (closer to the grill)? I will know more once i get the intercooler in hand.

The core support is the same, the DM radiator will bolt right in. The intercooler has ears that lock into clips on the DM radiator. Those clips aren't present on the 8.1 radiator. Although I haven't actually looked, it's very unlikely. Also there's two bolt holes that line up between the IC and RAD for fastening. My shop manuals show the DM oil cooler to be one of those cooled by the heather core circut at the filter, whereas the 8.1 plumbs hot oil to the radiator tank and back cooled. So it's two completely different ways of doing the same thing. You can either use an aftermarket air to oil cooler up front or an water/oil at the fiter. Air to oil are more readily availiable for aftermarket use.

 

It seems posible you could make the IC work without the DM radiator but I'm too lazy to try that. I've found the radiators listed used for acceptable prices but I'm waiting for another setup to come on Ebay.

i took a look this afternoon and here is what i see......not a whole lot of room!..LOL

 

In this order from engine to grill i have:

 

1. radiator

2. a/c condensor

3. some sort of cooler...its about 10"x14"

4. another very small external cooler on the right side of the radiator running verticaly...its about 3" wide and 12" long

 

I thought the 10"x14" cooler was the oil cooler but i saw the radiator has lines running into both sides which i assume are trany and engine oil. What are those other coolers out in front of the condensor for?

 

I will try and get a few pics if your not sure what im talkin about.

One will be power steering, I'm not sure about the other.

Okay, the small on the right is power steering like you said. The other one, as wierd as it seems is also a tranny cooler. Looks like there are two trany coolers on these trucks, a primary and and auxilary. I have not looked to see how its plumbed up yet, but it seems odd. I checked this on my ESi manual, can you check your shop manuals and confirm this?

What about putting a D-Max intercooler onto a 1/2 ton, I assume the differences would be similar (Radiator, other coolers, Core support). What about hood clearance since 1/2 tons don't have the extra large rise at the hood, 99-04's anyways. I've wanted to add a supercharger with intercooler (not Whipple) but didn't like the mounting locations of the aftermarket intercoolers, which led me to the idea of adding a D-max intercooler. If anything I could mount it up in a somewhat reasonable manner, maybe lower if need be. I figured electric fans would free up some space too... Any definate "No this won't work"s?

I never say it "Cant work" but due to the larger core support and frame rails of the HD trucks, it has been said that you need to trim about 2" off of the top of the Dmax intercooler to fit it into a 1/2 ton. I have never seen pictures to verify this, but it has been tried and given up on due to the cost of having to cut and modify the I/C.

    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
