What is the definition of Silverado or is it a place? Just curious how Chevy came up with the name. Thanks!

I'll take stab at this before it googlized..

"rado" is spanish for large or massive, colorado, laredo, tornado

"silver" is spanish for money

So, what you got is a BMF expensive truck or silverado

It was the name of a trim package on a chevy truck before it became the name of a truck *they had a Cheyenne and a Silverado trim package) which ads confusuion because there was a 99 "Siverado" oldstyle truck and a 99 Silverado truck. I do not think that GM used good judgement in naming a truck after a trim package and should have used something different .

They also had the "Scottsdale" trim package,Which was the mid-level trim pkg.,at one time.

The '99 "Old-Body-Style" truck was actually not refered to as a "Silverado" but as a "C/K" truck,They were available in two trim levels....Base and LS.

They had no "Silverado" badging on them at all.

My 87 K20 says SILVERADO on the doors and again on the right side of the dash. But is known as a Chevrolet truck.

This truck has manual windows and locks, only A/C (long time disconnected) and cruise control.

I was refering to the '99-2000 Old-Body-Style trucks as far as the badging,Not the '73-'86 C/K and '87-'91 R/V trucks.

But even then they were refered to as a "C/K" or "R/V" truck.

Chevrolet Silverado

The Silverado is the latest name for Chevrolet's line of full-size pickup trucks. The first pickup from Chevrolet was introduced in 1930, and vehicles before 1999 are detailed in the Chevrolet C/K page. The nameplate dates back to 1975 when it was offered as an upscale trim package. At the present time, the Silverado pickup is the second-best selling vehicle in the United States, well behind the Ford F150 pickup.

The Silverado 1500 and Silverado 2500 are Chevrolet's light-duty pickup. The Heavy-Duty C/K pickups were continued alongside the Silverado through 2000, with the new Silverado HD introduced in 2001.

Silverado

Released in 1999, this was the first redesign of Chevrolet's full-size pickup line since 1988. The truck was now called the Silverado, which was a trim line of the Chevrolet C/K previously. It is available in many different versions, including 4x4, crew cab, and dualie. Engine options include the Vortec 4300 V6, Vortec 4800 V8, and Vortec 5300 V8. Two versions of the 6.0 liter Vortec 6000 were added, a 300hp version in 2001, and a 345hp version for 2003.

The Silverado will get a new grille design for 2006 and will be replaced by an all-new model for 2007.

Hmmm.......as far as I can tell, Silverado was a silver mine in the Napa Valley, California. Silverado Trail There was a silver mine named Silverado, a city named Silverado City and the Silverado Trail.

OK I'll try to explain this so its not too confusing!

There always was C/K trucks ("C" for 2wd-"K" for 4wd)

The R/V ("R" for 2wd-"V" for 4wd) nameplates came out in '87 when GM was coming out with the "new-for '88" C/K trucks,They was still producing the then "Old-Body-Style" ('73-'86) C/K trucks so they needed a different model nameplate to make it easier to tell what truck you had,especially for us parts guys!

So heres the way it goes for the nameplates from '73-up:

'73-'86 are "C/K" trucks

'87-'91 are "R/V" Then "Old-Body-Style" trucks (Most of these are Blazers/Suburbans and 1-Ton Chassis or Crew-Cabs)

'88-2000 are "C/K" Then the "New-Body-Style" trucks.

'99-'06 are all "C/K" trucks,But it gets confusing for us parts guys when people come in with a '99 or 2000 truck and they have no idea what style truck they have,since GM built both styles (The carryover trucks were known as "Classics")

Thats why its important to ALWAYS have your VIN when you go to your dealer for parts.

You know i work here in the parts dept. at a dealer and i thought i knew my cars and trucks but wow so many models and variations...lol the c/k is more less 2 or 4 wheel drive.....as also goes for the r/v 2 or 4wd what bothers me is that they offered 2 trucks at the same time for example i can have an 88 c/k truck and a 88r/v truck

ill have you all know that this bothers the s**t out of me being a parts guy and makes this bell and howell system like a where's waldo..lol but aparently ive found out if you just ask the customer wheather or not you have vent windows that seems to be the deciding factor in wheather or not you have a c/k or r/v

Its gonna get more confusing sablowme,GM's doing the same thing for '07.

They are going to build both style trucks again,From June to December this year they are building the current GMT800 trucks as '07's,these are going to be refered to as "Classic" Silverado's/Sierra's.

Then in January of '07 they are going to start building the "New-for '07" GMT900 Trucks.

So us parts guys get to get all confused again
