Well i m giving up on the snow for this year.. Here there calling for no snow to stay until early jan which means sledding is gone for the year..

So...................

Instead of buying my sled i m going to put half the money into a good used pickup and fix it up..

Now this is where i need some opinions..

I m looking for an early year S10.. Between 88 - 93 to pull apart and fix up.. Any suggestion on what year and what to look for... I dont know what year the 4.3 came out.. So if any of those years has one let me know cause thats kind of a want for me..

Thanks

S-10, yikes, the sound of that gives me shivers.  I HATED mine with a passion, it was a '92 2 door Blazer.  Underpowered, rough riding, too small, rusting hunk of metal with no interior space.  Yes, I had the 4.3L High Output motor (what they called it) that always left me searching for the high output.  The thing was worthless in any kind of snow or mud.  Had to have 4x4 on all the time since the wheelbase was so short.  If you were in two wheel and hit a patch of snow you'd be turned around before you knew what happened, put the thing on two wheels once when that happened.  They were very prone to rusting, every single Blazer you see running around these parts of that body style has rusted out rocker panels and fenders at the least, mine was pathetic with the rust, the way the panels are made just holds the snow packed with salt up in there, letting rust happen in no time.

If you can't tell what my recommendation is by now, you will soon get it.  Don't even think about one of these!!!!!!

The 4.3L was introduced in the S-10 in 1988.  Before that you would get the 2.8L.  There was no manual tranny option until 1989 with the 4.3L.

In 1987 you would get EFI in the full size truck, and it would be the body style from 2 generations ago.  In 1988 the fullsize trucks went to the last generation body style (but you probably already knew that).

I was originally going to use it for a main use offroad truck.. I put about 3 good scratches in my truck on the pass side that start at the mirror and go half way down the box.. And of course in a black truck the scratches are white so there horribly noticeable.. (pics to come)

So what i would like to do is build a nice offroad truck preferably an S10 just because the size on the trails.. I wanted to stay with GM and the 4.3 cause then i can get used to the parts on the engine and then work on my truck when it comes up to it...

Plus it gives me a chance to do some custom work on a used truck which i ve always wanted to do just havent had the time/money..

Mainly i was ready to spend 7500 bucks on my sled but with all the weather being so warm even if we get a cold snap here for a solid week *very unlikely when its supposed to hit +18 today* it wouldnt make a difference unless winter lasted until may...

If you want an off-roader, I would find an old chevy 3/4 ton w/ a solid front axle so that is pre-90's.  Throw a 6" lift on it and some 35's.  It's a little wider than an S-10 but you can run bigger tires and a 350 or 454 has more power.  Or, I would look into an old Jeep CJ

Buy the sled...ride it this winter....then put an asphalt track on it and wheels on the skiis and get some use out of it in the summer months.  Asphalt drags are getting really big in NY. It's going to make grass racing a thing of the past.

I've seen some where the guys race sleds across a lake, that's crazy.  I mean, if you let off the throttle, glug glug glug, bye bye sled.

I've heard of that.

I also heard of (Believe it or not) guys racing 4x4 rigs across lakes in Iceland. It was on TLC's "Extreme Machines".

Extremely modified 4x4 buggies running across lakes @ 70+ MPH. Let up just a little bit, and it bogs down and sinks.

If you are looking for this as mainly an off-roader, do not go with a fullsize pickup.  They are just too big and heavy for major off-road adventures.  I'd think with a little bit of work on the 4.3V6, a small suspension lift, and 33" tires you would be set.  And you could save some scratches on your good truck.  Sure the solid axle would be nice, but it comes at the disadvantage of having a much bigger truck, and it doesn't sound like thats what you want.

Kansas - Thats exactly what i was thinking about! I thought of the fullsize but the main downfall to that is size.. Thats why i wanted an older S10 cause there small enough to fit on the trails with some money invested in it the truck would do well for what i needed..

I just prefered the S10 cause then once i know how the truck runs i can work on my Z with no problems.. Plus i can get parts for next to cost *which helps in the long run*

Everyone will know what i buy when i get it.. ;)

I m not completely giving up on winter and snow.. I would just like to see some in the next few weeks.. If we get some good snow fall my sled is still there and i will buy it.. I have til Jan 1st to decide whether or not i want to keep my sled stored at the dealer.. After that they sell it...

Trust me the only way it wouldnt be not sold is if there was still green grass after xmas..

LETS GO SNOW LETS GO!
