My girlfriend and I just bought a couple of AMD Clawhammer 64 bit processors. We've been usin' em for a little bit and love them. I also managed to get my hands on a copy of XP x64.

What all do I need to do? I've downloaded all my drivers in 64 bit that were avail. I figure other other drivers will be included in windows like they are now.

Anyone had good expirences with this?

From what I've heard, a lot of people are avoiding 64bit XP, because of the drivers. Apparently, it will only run signed 64 bit drivers, so if you have some hardware that doesn't have a 64 bit driver for it, you won't be able to run it at all.

I haven't had 1st hand experience with this, that's just what I've heard from others. Good luck!

I built a 64-bit machine in March. I didn't get XP-64 because of the minimal driver support. I wanted stability from my driver system so I stuck with plain XP and haven't had any major issues. Of course, I have a dual-core system and iTunes is multi-threading, so I can rip and encode an entire CD in 5 mins.

when you say "encode" a CD what does that involve? I was able to rip an audio CD easy in 5 minutes with my old XP3000+.

I've noticed the minimal driver support myself, but so far everything I've looked for on my machine has 64-bit drivers. I'm still debating..

My gut says wait until Jan for Windows Vista. I should also have a SATA drive by then.

Without 64bit software you probably won't notice much of a difference. I think 64 bit processors are more suited for servers and thier software.

Girls that buy AMD Clawhammer 64 bit processors?

Nope, I sure don't...But you should probably keep her.

haha yea shes really great. Actually what happened...I build her a computer last week and was nice enough to load all her music (like 100 CDs probably) on to her computer so that she could make MP3 CDs to play in her car. Right after I finished her computer my motherboard got shorted out by my power supply.

I'd never really had any expirence with that extra 4 pin connector and I didn't see the connector i the whole bundle of cables, so I had been basically using the power supply incorrectly for like a year. Definatly a dumb thing to do for a guy as computer savvy as myself. So it ruined my power supply and my Socket A motherboard.

She felt bad about me doing all that work on her new computer and teaching her about how things work that she surprised me with a brand new Athlon XP64 (Clawhammer core). All I had to do was buy a motherboard and a video card since the board didn't have on board video. I bought the exact same motherboard that I got her (ABIT UL8), but I got a little better video card.

Definatly a keeper.

Encode, as in compress it to MP3 format.

I HAD one EVGA 7800 GT video card, just ordered a BFG 7800 GT to make it SLI. The 7800 is no longer being produced so I had to jump on it while I could still find one NEW.

Yea, thats about as long as it took my XP3000+ to do it. I think that maybe you didn't see a benifit from the 64 bit chip is that most CD extractors likely arn't 64 bit, and likely do not multi-thread.

My video card is an ASUS GeForce4 MX4000. It's only 64 megs, but it was also 29.99.

Did you read my post? I used iTunes, which most certainly DID multi-thread. I didn't see a benefit from the 64-bit because I'm not running a 64-bit OS.

I know it multi-threaded because both cores were running at about 75%, only one would have been cranking away if iTunes didn't multi-thread.

What bitrate are you using? I'm at 160 kbps, if you're using a lower bit-rate that could account for the similar time. Could also be that it'sa drive-speed limitation (at the CD drive) and we're both ripping/encoding as fast as the drive will go.

I too use 160. It appears that CD Drive is mainly responsible for extraction speed.

Definitely not worth the trouble nor the money for 64bit

The XP 64 os isn't worth a crap, games won't run right on it, no everyday performance gains (web surfing, email.. blah blah blah)..

Thats what I hate about the processor companies like AMD they make consumers think that 64 is the new end all be all and that they need it or they will fall behind, which is crap, no one short of a server admin needs 64bit.

I can do all of my graphic design, web design, photo editing, music listening, game playing, perfectly fine with a normal Intel processor, and regular ole XP Pro.

I disagree. Maybe at this standpoint the 64-bit OS won't be as valuable, but I think before long it'll be the only way to go.

Watch this video...maybe it'll convince you.

Didn't convince me. Of course the software they are running was probably optimized for Intel instructions not AMD's. Again the video didn't show anything a normal user would do with it making it not worth the money for joe smoe who checks his email, surfs the web and play solitaire. LOL

You can do that with a 486 and a 14 baud modem...But who would want to.?
