Octane + Tune

I've got a stock 2002 2500hd, 4.10 rear and 6.0L

Just emailed back and forth a little with wait4me tune options.

1-2mpg on 87 octane and 2-4mpg on 93 octane

So I'm debating uping to 93 octane because based on just 30gallons @ $.20/gallon thats $6 more at the pump. And say you get 3mpg more that is 90 additional miles per tank for $6, well worth the extra expense of the higher octane.

So........besides really clean injectors are there issues with runn'n 93 in our trucks? Anybody have the wait4me tune with the 93 octane tune? Thanks!

I have a 2002 YukonXL with the 5.3l.

I used to run 87octane but made a mistake when I ordered the wait4me tune. I told Jessie I run 89 octane. So, since installing the tune a month or so ago, I've been running 89-91. I won't go back to 87. Better response, better mileage etc.

And the tune of course gives my truck that needed increase in performance. :)

I think the mileage increase estimates that Jesse advertises are unrealistic. I have been running an 89 octane tune on my 01 2500HD 6.0 for about three months and have seen little if any increase in mileage. Maybe just enough to cover the cost of going from 87 to 89 octance. Some will say that because I have this new found power that I would natrually drive with a heavier foot. That was the case at the beginning but I have babied this truck through multiple tanks just like I had before the tune and can not really tell much of any difference in mileage

From a performance standpoint this thing rocks. No complaints there. I would put it up against any other $400-500 tune on the market.

so no issue with running say 93 octane in our trucks?

if his higher octane tune gets the same mpg on mid grade as high grade then i see no point filling up with high grade as mid has the same mpg results

I think your missing the point of octane tunes. A 93 octance tune will have increased timing compared to an 89 octane tune. If you try to run 89 octane in a 93 octane tune you will most likely get a lot of pinging. Not recommended

The only reason to go to a 93 octane tune would be to get that last bit of performance. But like I said once you order the 93 octane tune you are stuck with running 93 octane fuel $$.

gotcha............but if you're running 93 octane and getting 30miles per tank more than 89 isn't it worth it?

"87-90 octanes will give 1-2 miles per gallon better gas mileage and 15-20 more horse power.

91-93 octanes will give 2-4 miles per gallon better gas mileage and 25-30 more horse power"

so take the lesser and say 1mpg with the 87-90 tune.......roughly 30 miles more per tank

and the less of the 91-93 tune at 2mpg incrase.........roughly 60 miles more per tank

soooo, anybody see these changes with these 2 tunes? because if you don't get 2mpg more with the higher octane tune its not worth the extra $ at the pump

After reading this I am thinking about putting a tank of mid grade in next time to see what it will do with out getting a tune.

I have never put anything but 87 in the Burb - on the highway I usually get 16 - 17 when cruising at about 70 - 80.

Isn't the onboard computer supposed to sense the octane and adjust accordingly?

Tunes make me nervous - I have seen some posts where people say the gains are produced by running too lean which will cause issues down the road.

Unless you have signs of detonation going on (i.e. pinging) then going up in octane with a stock tune will do nothing but cost you more money. You get the best performance running the lowest octane you can just prior to detonation. High octane = slower burn. Low octane = faster burn.

Higher octane fuels are not designed to produce more power. They are there to prevent detonation when running higher compression or advanced timing.

Well if you run the numbers based stricly on Jesse's mileage claims then I guess it would be a wash. I for one am not a believer in those mileage figures he claims.

I tell you guys I debated long and hard, and read a ton on different tunes and companies, finally settled on the Diablo Predator, Installed it this evening on a 87 tune for the 6.0 and holy cow what a difference in the truck. It was beyond anything I could have hoped for.

Advantage 3 different tunes, 87, 91 and 93 your choice as you want, I can turn the torque and abuse managment on and off when ever I want in like 3 min. Winter time with Icy roads you don't want all that power to the wheels, just plug it in and turn it back on.

Any time I want to try something or change tire sizes, what ever, I can do it, I don't need to reorder a new tune any time.

Watch on ebay you can get a deal once and a while, I picked mine up for $70 shipped.

    • Looking for advice from this group. Took my flawless 2020 6.2 TB to an unnamed shop for routine rear brakes and oil change. Tech forgot to put oil back in after the full service and needles to say, destroyed my engine.  It’s all on their shop video so they are responsible.   I had my Chevy dealer do the analysis and they confirmed its compromised and said engine replacement. The manager said they only get GM reman engines from GM with full 3 yr warranty and the one they would put in is not same as what’s they are swapping out on 21-25 for recall.    I am looking for advice why that would be a different engine because obviously I had the good 6.2 year and replacing it has my concerns with that recall for 21-15   Also what’s the pros and cons of accepting the engine swap vs telling the shop that bricked the truck to pay up so I buy a new truck. I’m concerned about stigma resale eventually if I just decide to get rid of it after the swap or other issues showing up after the swap out.
    • Just looked up my records.  I've never gone over 5000 miles between oil changes.  At 46K miles, I have 10 oil changes.  I hope that will help.  I also installed the disabler last year.  I've still had a few times when it didn't seem to engage (which I can tell because the start stop feature kicks in), but for the most part, I think it's working.  For some reason, GM did not include the number of cylinders running in the information screen like I had on other models.  In my Cadillac, it shows me when it's running on 4 cylinders on the fuel milage screen.  I can't find that on my '21 Denali.
    • you might read through the info on gmupfitter.com for your truck, to find a good power source.
    • Melling I believe is/was the OEM on the lifters who explored this problem some years ago. The white paper they generated on the topic indicated two items of note when I read it. 1.) They only fail on the switch. Prevent the switch, prevent the failure. 2.) The majority fail due to deposits messing up the timing of that switch. Anyway that's what I got from it.    Mine have always been active, 195K+ now, and my oil maintenance is surgically clean.    Of course this assumes good parts. That is no heat treat issue or machining flaws. I get comfortable that these issues are in the rearview mirror by about 30K. IMHO naturally.
    • Yes, the key seems to be with the half tons that if it has the Z71, then it definitely has the two speed. What got me was that the two speed AND the lower geared towing package option could not be chosen together the last few years unless it was mated up to the 6.2. Want the 3.0 duramax and 3.73 tow gears ... nope, can't get the two speed transfer case ( neighbor son realized that after he had bought his used 3.0 half ton .. where the frick is the low range ? ! ).    I am still unsure which truck series, the half ton or the HD truck that the original poster is referring to for sure other than yes his question is in the HD section of this forum but that doesn't guarantee the question got asked in the right section.
