Good Year Wrangler ST's on a 2003 Silverado

I bought a 2003 Silverado with Good Year Wrangler ST's on it. I have read some bad reviews for this tire on Tire Rack. The original owner had replaced the factory set with another set of them and they aren't that old. The truck is 2 Wheel Drive and I am worried about being able to do any snow driving at all if the tires are terrible. Do you think they will be okay or should I purchase a new set?

I have the same set of tires that came stock on my 4x4 EC. They are pretty crappy IMHO and do a decent job on dry pavement and horrible on wet so I wouldn't expect anything more on snow or mud. I almost lost it on a wet freeway interchange turning right and hitting a mild Los Angeles road imperfection at a grandpaly rate of speed. ZERO CONFIDENCE in these tires but to cheap to buy A/T Revos until winter rolls around.

As much as I love Goodyear tires and wouldn't use any other brand,I would NOT use the Wrangler ST's!! :P

I don't know what they were thinking making a tire with tread like that

Those things are no good in the rain, let alone the snow,I wouldn't even think of driving with them in any snow.

Get yourself a set of Wrangler AT/S's or Wrangler SilentArmor's. :D

'nuff said. I've put up with them for coming up on 3 years now.

Pulling out of the dealership back in 2003, having driven my new truck all of 20 feet, I lost traction and as always, the locker kicked in and slid the rear sideways. A few weeks later I skidded across two lanes in rainy weather.

After that I got used to them. My old truck had even worse tires for a long time, but its open diff kept me from sliding it sideways. My sister took that truck through a red light on worse tires than the ST's (no abs - '91 MY). Just before I got the new one, I got a set of Michelin LTX M/S put on - awesome tires.

I'd think these tires would be more tolerable without the locker. They've given me good highway service for nearly 45k now. Looking forward to replacing them, hopefully before winter.

That said,

I can get around in mild winter weather, which is all I've experienced the past few winters, in four wheel drive.

Last winter I had to drive to campus to take a final exam - wouldn't have even gotten out of my parking space at my apt without 4x4. This was on a quarter inch of largish sleet.

Don't plan on going anywhere in your truck in hostile weather, especially if it has an open diff.

If you need a cheap solution, you might look at e-bay for a lightly used set of tires with a better pattern on them.

If you put the gear selector (provided you have the 4L60 tranny) in "2" it will actually start in second gear. This has provided me with great amounts of additional traction when starting in the snow, even with my 2wd Silverado with the Wrangler ST's. Starting in 2 instead of D (or 1st, as that is what the tranny normally starts in D) restricts the amount of torque sent to the rear end, which causes wheel slippage.

How long do the ST's last as far as mileage....The truck has 76,000 miles on it and its on its second set....They seem to have quite a bit of tread left...but I wouldn't be too upset if in the winter I have to buy new tires for better snow traction....Another thing what kind of tires do you recommend? I dont do ANY towing at all. I never off road or anything. I just drive on the highway to work, but want something with a good ride/low noise and good snow traction.

You were thinking about using the goodyear glazed donuts in the snow!! Not gonna happen. The Built safety factor, i mean you won't be able to get out of your driveway with those things.

Buy Snow tires...
