time for a new engine

Hi I'm new here ,my name is Lou.

My 2001 5.3 engine has 150,000 on it. It knocks badly on start-up after sitting all night, and goes away after a couple of minutes at idle. Before I spend the money on a GM replacement, has GM fixed the problem, or are the newer engines doing the same thing after a few thousand miles

You may have a carbon buildup issue. Mine has 115000 and has done it off and on since 25000.

I recommend some BG44K through the fuel system. Should help it.

I have yet to hear of a Gen 3 engine fail from what you described.

carbon buildup. do a top end clean, clean out the TB, and the IAC. then change plugs, wires, and oil. (change oil is a must! but if plugs and wires are fairly new, just leave 'em be)

drive on.

my 4.8 was knocking on cold start at 70K - did a TEC and most of it went away.
