mikystyle Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 today i was drivin around and i passed a z71 like mine with the 99-02 body and it had quite the roar. Kinda made me jelious. I have a magnaflow dual catback and its pretty loud, but this truck roared. Souned nice. Made me think about some high flow cats. Would magnaflows high flow cats make any difference in noise level? You think this guy had hollowed out cats?
BLKESC Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 Don't know about the hollowed out cats, but the only way high flow cats would help for power is if they are a larger diameter than stock. Even then to take full benefit you'd need headers and all the pipe inbetween the cats and muffler and headers to get more power. You may want to look into a more aggressive muffler or some glasspacks.

Im not really lookin into changin the muffler since it cost me about 480bones for the stainless steel system. He probably just had headers and true duels into flowmaster or something. Changing all the pipes upfront would be quite the job.
OnyxMAX Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 strait pipes or no cat headers. headers add lots of sound and agression. from the performance standpoint no cats can add around 5 hp well within dyno margin of error.

It was a newer truck so in order to pass inspection he would need cats and a muffler.
TEE Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 I'm runnin' Edelbrock shorty headers with Edelbrock RPM catback system and always get compliments on the way the truck sounds...no obnoxious drone just "tight" til you let off and at cruising almost no tone
superbee Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 I replaced the stock cat with a Catco hi flow on my 88 and it definitely sharpened the sound, better IMO.
srlbotanical Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 I have no idea how high flow cats would affect the sound, but I do know that the sound of an exhaust can very greatly even with the same muffler. A lot of people will say that a flowmaster 40 is way too laud for example. But it is amazing how different those flow's sound through 3 inch pipe compared to 2.25" pipe. Your magnaflow has a great sound, its a quality system. But if that guy had 3 inch pipes and a flowmaster 40 or glass packs its going to be real "aggressive". Steve
