5.3 motor

i have a 2002 5.3 motor .i like the motor so far but was wondering ,when did this motor come out and has it proved to be dependable?

It was first put in the '99 trucks.  It is based on the LS1 that debuted in the '97 Corvette.

Yes it was first offered for the 1999 model year and was initially rated at 270hp/300lb-ft.  GM bumped it up to 285hp/325lb-ft the next year I think.  

 

Mine has 22000 miles and so far no troubles aside from a slight cold start tick which goes away after about 30 seconds.  Alot of folks seem to be having this noise, but so far I haven't heard of it causing any engine damage.  I'm happy with it overall.

This is true. The 5.3 came out in 99. The primary differences are Alum Heads, smaller Bore. More high tech improvments, the MPI Fuel Injection, the 1 coil per cyl, etc. I am very happy with my 5.3. 40K and going strong.

The 1999 model year is correct. The 5.3 runs and sounds great, can really scoot and is also capable of some impressive mileage if you stay out of the throttle.
