Silver Star Headlight Bulbs 9006

How long is everyone getting out of these bulbs? I had a set in my truck. It took a while to get used to the light color. After a while, I decided the color was good, and I had improved light spread. Then one went out,,,,,,,a few days later the other went out. I only got about 8-9 months of usage from them before they blew. I sent them back to Sylvania, and they replaced them with new. My day vs night driving is about normal, Id say 60-70% daytime.

Im just wondering how much time anyone else using them is getting.

TIA

I got about the same out of mine. I was driving home one night, which is rare, and my high beams were on. I saw a car coming at me so I clicked to low beams. They came on for a split second, then they both blew. I was in the darkness with a car coming at me. I got home and threw them away. I now have the stock bulbs back in.

I bought my first set back in 2001 not too long after I bought the truck. I had one go out back in April. I replaced all of them at the same time. I don't have any complaints about them. I'd say I got a good 5 years out of them. I replaced the original DRL's at the about the same time because one burned out.

I got rid of mine all together for a set of 6000k HID's. I must have replaced about 3 bulbs this year alone. I don't know what the problem was, I wasn't touching the bulb at all.

HID's= :shakehead:

What did the HID conversion run you?

Is it DOT legal? I thought I heard any HID conversion is non DOT.

FYI,,,,,If you have your receipt for the SilverStars, Sylvania will warranty them within one year of purchase. Its not spelled out anywhere, but if you call them, they will honor it. You have to send the old ones back, then they replace them.

I think the problem with the Silverstars in these trucks is the electrical systems in these trucks and not the bulbs. As in the DRL's going out as well.

I have Silverstars in two other non-GM cars and they have been doing fine for about 4 years now in each. High and low beams.

My brother has an 01 1500, his truck goes thru DRL bulbs all the time. My truck is an 01 2500HD, Ive had it for 3 years and never had a DRL bulb go out.

Sylvania tried to float the idea that having DRL's are what caused the SilverStars to go out so soon, due to many hours of use. I dont remember the total hours the SS's are rated for, but it seemed low. Once I told them my truck has separate DRL bulbs, they backed away from that.

What do you see being the problem with the electrical system in these trucks?

Voltage spikes. GM switched to 14 volt DRL bulbs to keep them from burning out.

What did the HID conversion run you?  The McCulloch 6000k kit was $270.00 picked up here locally.

Is it DOT legal?  I thought I heard any HID conversion is non DOT.  You are correct. If the vehicle did not come with an HID system, they are not legal. This kit is a true plug and play so if I got a ticket for them, it would only take 10 minutes to change it back over.

Who wants to go through all that everytime a bulb goes out? Also, someone told me that the problem I was having with the Silverstars blowing is because I am lowered. It's because of the bouncing my truck does in the front.

Here are a few pics of the kit and them installed.

I hear ya on that one. I have a new set in the package from Sylvania, they'll either be returned for credit somewhere or sold as new. I like the light, but Im not into changing bulbs every 8 months.
