sub woofer box

Thinking about building building a sub box to fit under the rear seat of my '05 ext cab. Should I build it so the woofer is firing up through the rear seat or firing down to the floor? How much air space should I allow between the woofer and the floor or seat bottom? Would an inch be enough to allow the speaker cone to move and let the thump out?

Thanks

An inch is cutting it close, but it really depends on the sub and how much excursion the cone will have.

Ever thought about pointing it towards the front of the cab? Size limiting of course.

just buy a box. you can save all the time and aggravation. i had a downfire in my ext. cab and it sounded great.

Just finished building a small box to hold a single 10 inch Rockford Fosgate Punch. This sub is can be used in smallish sealed enclosures, rec volume is .65 cu/ft. After subtracting for the speaker displacement and the internal bracing, my enclosure endend up at a hair over .72 cu/ft internal volume. I built it a bit larger than recomended figuring I'll throw a buch of poly-fill inside and try it out. Can always glue a block of syrofoam inside to take up some volume if needed. Got some sanding and finishing to do tomorrow.

Is that plyboard?

3/4 MDF is my material of choice.

Yeah I know MDF is the material of choice for sub boxes. But I'm a cheap S.O.B. and had to find a use for some pf the scrap plywood I had laying around. Nothing invested but a couple hours on a rainy day so far. Sub has been ordered maybe I'll get around to trying it out next weekend.

Update

Well here it is sanded, primed and coated with Duplicolor brand sparay-on bed liner. Used some 1/8 inch foam material I had left over from a flooring project, to line the inside of the enclosure. Couple of #10-32 machine screws, washers and nuts worked pretty good for speaker terminals (yeah I was too cheap to buy the terminal cups)

Rockford Fosgate includes a nice stick-on gasket with the woofer. Had to ditch the magnet cover as the internal bracing was in the way. oops

Finished product.

The textured bedliner finish fits well with the Work truck interior, looks like it belongs there.
