daviddsims Posted September 23, 2006 Posted September 23, 2006 I took my tires to a shop to rotate them cause the front driver tire is wearing badly on the outside. The tires are the stock general ameritrac on a 05 crew cab silverado 2wd. I know I am supposed to rotate more often but havent and this is the first time with 20000 miles on it. Should I be worried that is the only tire wearing and the whole outer edge is worn perfectly round now? Thanks.
SoCalChris Posted September 23, 2006 Posted September 23, 2006 Honestly, the General tires are absolute junk. The tread started falling off of mine with 5,000 miles on them. I had to fight with the dealer to replace them under warranty, so I doubt they will do anything to help you out. I would keep an eye on them, and start setting money aside to buy a new set of LT rated tires. I think that part of the problem is that GM is shipping the trucks with P rated tires, instead of truck tires that they should have on them.
Bish Posted September 23, 2006 Posted September 23, 2006 If it is wearing more on the outside than the inside, I would get your alignment checked. Might be crummy tires but uneven wear usually means something is not properly aligned. I would suggest now but DEFINITELY do it before you invest in new tires.
MS3DALE Posted September 23, 2006 Posted September 23, 2006 I totally agree with SoCalChris and Bish,The General's are that great of a tire at all and have your alignment checked before you buy new tires. BUT..... you need to rotate your tires EVERY 3-4,000 miles-6,000 miles at the most.I can't imagine going 20,000 miles before rotating. Tire rotation on these trucks, especially 4x4s,is very critical to good tire wear. Remember three things... 1.Proper Inflation (I keep mine at 35) 2.Rotation (I rotate mine every 3k) 3.Proper Alignment (I get it checked every 10k) I've always managed to get over 50,000 miles on a set of tires on every truck I've owned.I also run nothing but Goodyears, either Wrangler RT/S's or AT/S's.
