Parts store pricing WOW

Just got back from both AutoZone and Kragen...Fram Air Filter CA8755A was $22.99 at both stores..went to Wal-Mart and same item was $12.49...ALMOST half price...I'm sure Wal-Mart is not using this item for a lost price leader...and I'll bet the same item at the dealer will be about $49.95...so who is gauging and who is selling low...I'll bet Wal-Mart is still making at least 30% or it won't stock an item. Even places like some of the BIG home improvement store won't carry an item unless they can make at least 60% on an item...

So shop around people...keep your money in your pockets and not the pockets of the CEO's getting 400 MILLION dollar retirement buyouts.

You still use fram??  :nopity:

What's wrong with Fram air filters? I know why their oil filters are disliked, but what's up with their air filters?

Meh.. if they'll cheapen up the oil filters like they have, why wouldn't they cheapen up.. everything else as well?

/Used to think fram was the best, too.

As for why it was so cheap at Wal-Mart, remember that they buy pretty much everything in HUGE quantities to get the best deal they can, or negotiate deals to get things cheap from the manufacturer. They also buy stuff at auctions and anyplace else they can get it cheap. Their financial people are some of the BEST at beating up their suppliers. Unfortunately, their suppliers need all the business they can get, so they take the abuse. The only company I know of that's better at beating up suppliers is GM.

Also, WalMart often encourages their suppliers to sell them poorer quality items than they are selling to their other vendors, so they can sell them cheaper.

For example, Levi Jeans that are sold at WalMart aren't the same Levi's that you would buy at Sears. They are an offbrand that Levis buys, and relabels as genuine Levis, so they can sell them to WalMart for less.

Here's some articles about it...

That story makes me not buy critical items like filters and oil at WalMart, I simply don't trust the things that they're selling there. It especially makes me wonder about that when the 5 quart jugs of Mobil1 that WalMart sells aren't available anywhere else.

As far as cheap Mobile1, Costco sells it by the case, for slightly higher than WalMart does.

I honestly don't know if the Mobil1 that WalMart sells is any diffent than the Mobil1 sold by other stores. I'm just speculating, based on what they do with other items, and that you can't buy Mobil1 in the same style container that WalMart sells anywhere else.

For all I know, it could be the exact same stuff, I just don't really feel like chancing it over a few dollars.

Do you really think Exxon/Mobil (a company that could buy wal-mart with petty cash) is going to risk their reputation just to sell to Wal-Mart ???

Their Oil (Exxon/Mobil) HAS to meet specifications from API and several other labs and NOT Wal-Mart...

Wal-Mart makes money by cheap labor...do you think they encourages the cows to make a lower grade milk ???

FYI 5qt JUGS of Mobil 1 can be bought at almost any Parts store...yes even in SoCal where you are.
