Looking for new tires 05 Z71

So its soon going to be winter and I need tires for my 05 Sierra Z71. The factory Bridgestones have 10k on them and they will not make it through winter...heck they are bad in just the rain as is. I would like to keep the stock size- 265/70/17 - but if I could Id love to move up to an LT load range C but I dont haul enough for the load range E.

I live in SWPA near Pittsburgh and all of our roads suck. Most of my driving is on back roads or highway. I live a top a hill that barely gets plowed in the winter. The truck only saw measurable snow once last winter so who knows what this winter will be like. The most off roading Ive done has been dirt farm roads to get to my buddies cabin and the occasional trip into my backyard, which is all steep hills.

As for hauling, the most I haul is my ATV or some building materials. Most of the time im just haulin air :D

I had BFG All Terrains on our 2000 S10 ZR2 and got 18K on them before they needed replaced. Loved the tire hardly ever used 4x4 with them cause it didnt need it but I think they may be too extreme for me now.

My dad had Michelin LTX on his 2500HD load range E and he got over 20K miles on them just before he traded them in and he says he will be putting them on his new 06 as soon as the stock Bridgestones wear out....which wont take long if they are anything like mine.

I see a lot of guys running the Bridgestone Dueler REVOs but with the luck Ive had with the factory Dueler 693 Im afraid to stick with Bridgestone.

Im so confused.....ive been looking online at:

BFG ATs

Michelin LTX and Cross Country ( we have the CC on our Bravada and I dont think its tough enough for a truck)

GoodYear Fortera wit hthat kevlar and stuff in it

REVOs maybe

Anyone out there HELP :smash: ..lol Thanks for your input in advance, I just wanna make the right choice for my truck

I'll suggest two Mike...Either Goodyear Wrangler AT/S or Wrangler "SilentArmor"

I would NOT go with the Fortera,I just don't think its gonna be agressive enough for you for the area up there.

Both the AT/S and SilentArmor (Which has Kevlar in it also) are smooth, quiet, good wearing tires that I think you'll be quite pleased with,I've had a few sets of AT/S's and got over 50k on all of them (Heck I've gotten over 50k on all the Goodyear's I've had over the years)

I love my revos and will be buying another set when these wear out. (Bigger Of course) but they are really quite and will bite into almost anything and dont do to bad in mud either.

I went with my second set of Revos last December or so. Loved the first set and those as well. My other options I was looking at were the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armors as someone else mentioned.

Mike, I'm putting a set of Michelins on mine next week. I have 18000 miles on the stockers and I'm down to the wear bars. Michelins are the only tires I have ever put on a truck that didn't wear out by 18000 miles. I'm surprised these Bridgestones have lasted this long. My last truck, an 02 xcab Z71, I had 30000 miles on a set of Michelins and there was still 8-9/32 of tread left. I replaced the stock Firestones at 13000 on that truck. Got to love these crappy Western PA roads.

Ted, What Michelins are you going with? Im thinking the LTX M/S. My dad had these on his 01 HD and loved them....they were load range E ofcourse. Looks like this tire only comes in P or LT-E rating for our 17" size.

Mike, They are the X radial LT. Treadwear 500, Traction A, Temp. B They are 700 bucks installed at Sam's. They are also a P rated tire. Max load 2305 lbs. @ 35 PSI. They do come in a LT load range C also, but only for 16". Those are 2470 lbs.@ 50 PSI.

What is it about the roads up there that are so hard on tires? I'm in North Texas and I usually manage at least 40-50k for a set of tires no sweat. In fact it looks like my factory Bridgestones are going to last quite a while, like 50k+ miles.

They are pretty much crap. Voted by a Trucker magazine worst roads for many years in a row. When our roads start to get bad, they just spray oil and add gravel on them year after year before they are fixed right. This makes a very abrasive road surface. The stone chips are unreal. It's hard trying to keep something nice.

Ok, I've heard about this from my neighbor who is from eastern Ohio. He told me about the tar and gravel treatment but I had no idea that it would be so hard on tires. I sell construction equipment parts and I have a lot of customers up that way and they have always complained about short tire life on their equipment trailers. This answers some of my questions about why..

Our roads are nice and flat, most- even in the neighborhoods are all concrete. Tires last a long time here, and tar is rare...

Thanks for the info Rammer!
