GM Tonneau Cover Keys

I just purchased a new 2006 GMC Sierra SLT with the GM Folding Hard Tonneau Cover as shown here:

There are two access locks on the cover - one just behind the cab on top of the tonneau cover and one on the tail end of the tonneau cover. There is a key in both of them but they can't be removed. My son took the truck to the dealer for me and was informed "they don't come out".

 

Is this true? If they don't come out, then it can't be locked. Do you know of something my dealer doesn't about the tonneau cover?

This is nonsense. The keys must come out. I have the advance cover, which is very similar and it too has two locks and keys are removable.

I've tried everything I know to get the keys out and nothing. I even took cover off the bottom of the tonneau cover to look at the bottom of the lock and don't see any way to get it out. I thought there might be a hole that I would push the end of a paper clip into and it would release the key - but nothing.

 

My son said the two guys at the service could who had the same cover said the keys don't come out just as the service advisor said the same thing.

 

Is this crazy or what? Other than being a glorified cover, it's useless as there is no security.
