The largest metal piece you can find that isn't suspension, steering, or drive train related. If it isn't your car hand the end of the rope to the owner and let them connect to their vehicle, any damage that ensues is their fault. In the case where you will have to jerk or apply large amounts of force to the rope hang a blanket or heavy coat on the rope in case it breaks.

If it's on a truck, you should have tow hooks on the front and if you don't have a hitch on the back, I'd suggest getting one or welding a hook to your frame or something. You CAN wrap it around the rear axle on a truck but only as an absolute last resort.

I would never wrap a tow strap around my rear axle. One good snatch and you could have it out of alignment. If any thing find a hole in the frame and strap it there. A bumper support or anything but not the axle.

As I said, an absolute LAST resort.

you know my last resort...call a tow truck. I've never been somewhere they couldn't have winched me out of. $50 and it saves you rear. pun intended.
