Oil Analysis Standards?

I just had my first oil analysis done on my Yukon XL and the report came back as normal with no action that needed to be taken. The report provides all of the detail in parts per million but I have been unable to find any info that provides the standards or guidleins for an anylysis. I would just like to compare my #s to some type of standards.

 

Can anyone tell me where I can find this info?

Who did the analysis? Normally they provide the universal average along side your results. The universal average is just that, they take all the tests that they have done on your perticular vehicle/engine and average out all that data. It will give you an idea of where you stand in the world of analysis's done on your vehicle.

Wingnut posted a good site to read up on oil analysis's. Go to the forum part of bobistheoilguy and then to the used oil analysis section. There is a ton of info on all kinds of makes and models in there. Seen one on a 2004 Lamborghini Murcielago.

I agree it's more about creating a baseline for YOUR vehicle and then looking for deviations from your averages. That would indicate something is wearing faster than before possibly indicating a potential problem. I've tested my Tahoe every oil change since new (180K+ now). I got wild variations in the first few oil changes while everything was breaking in. After about 10K, the results stay right around the averages. Now if anything jumps, it usually means something from a bad tank of gas to premature wear somewhere.

Gotta agree with Bish. We sample all oils on all tractors on the farm. They saved us once on a tractor. It showed a high level of one certain element. We were able to isolate the problem BEFORE the tractor went to the field, failed, cost down time and possibly more damage. Turns out that a piston ring was failing.

Staveley Services did the analysis. They do all the work for CARQUEST Filters and Wix. When I asked the question, I had received the analysis via e mail and after I recieved the hard copy, I found the back of the report contained a lot of useful info. I also spoke with the analyst who was great and provided me with more info over the phone.

 

My report was good according to him and I plan to do another in a couple of changes.

 

One of the reasons I did it was to track the ferreous metals. I bought a filter mag and wanted to see if it really reduced the ferreous metals or is it just a $50.00 gimmick. The test I have was without the filter mag installed and now I am running with it. This thing may have been a waste of money but I can tell you that it is a very powerful magnet. So powerful that you cannot simply pull it off the filter, you have to slide it off the bottom.

 

A good investment or a gimmick? I will see what happens with the next analysis that I run and let you know.
