2000 Silverado 1500 5.3 Fuel Pump

My truck's fuel pump is giving me problems and my dealer is wanting $700 dollars in order to fix it.

I know that I can get the pump itself from O'Reilly's for a little over a hundred.

What I need to know is the difficulty of changing this pump. What steps would I have to take in order to get it installed?

I have heard stories of people takin the beds off of their trucks while changing them and I am wondering what I will have to do.

Remove the 6-8 bolts holding the bed on, slide it back a little, and the pupm is sitting right on the top of the gas tank. Careful with wiring harness at rear, and fuel filler neck.

I heard back from the stealer today, my understanding, is the fuel pressure is reading at 7 psi. this to me means the pump is working. what is the possibility that the problem is just the filter, or the pressure regulator? and also, I am being told that there are 2 different pumps used in the 2000, how can I tell which one to get without removing the pump first?

Don't buy an aftermarket fuel pump. Buy the GM pump (the new ones are better than the old ones in your truck). The after market pumps are cheaper but don't last (this advice from my mechanic, based on his experience). From what I've been hearing, there is a design flaw with the fuel pumps in many of the 99 and later 1500 series trucks. There are two types of pumps and you won't know which one you have until you have the VIN number to give to the parts guy. I've been fighting the stalling (fuel pump failure)problem for over a year now but the price of $700 is what is keeping me from fixing it. The last time mine stalled was in the middle of a turn. I nearly hit a car coming the other way because, as we all know, when the engine dies, there is no steering! I wish that GM would admit their mistake and recall these d**n fuel pumps!
