RMS wattage on a Sub woofer

Im shopping for subs right now. I know a decent amount about em but I seem some subs that are RMS ratings with very large ranges. such as theres a phoenix gold sub that is rated "50-500 rms" or an audiobahn rated "50-450 rms" ... when a sub is rated at a range like this, what does it mean? is 50-500 rms going to perform as well as a sub rated simply "500 rms" ???

Yes, although when something is simply rated at 500W RMS, you don't know the minimum amount of power that you'll be able to put to that subwoofer without it making some bad sounds (Underpowering a sub creates some awful noises)... if you're going to be able to pump over 300W RMS from the amp to the sub, then buying one rated at just 500W RMS will not be a problem... if you have a tiny amp that struggles to push like 75W RMS, then you might want to start paying attention to the ones that handle from 50-500 RMS.
