Trailer Wiring

I tried searching and can't find the thread. I have a 2006 GMC Sierra, without the towing package. I bought the factory hitch and found the wiring at the spare tire. Hooked it up, along with a Tekonsha Prodigy brake controller. Hooked up the trailer, everything worked EXCEPT the electric trailer brakes.

Someone made a post (which I can't find) about a BLUE WIRE under the hood. I found the wire and for the life of me can't understand why it's not pinned to the control box under the dash where all the other wires are. I plugged in the harness and everything worked fine (except the brakes), the BLUE wire just is not there. I tapped into it under the hood and then ran it to the Prodigy. That works fine, however I have no idea if i'm right.

Can anyone that knows about the trailer wiring for a 2006 let me know if i'm correct and maybe why that wire is not inside the truck like all the other trailer wires.

Thanks

Bob

I don't know if this will help. But I had to put a 40amp maxi fuse in the fuse block under the hood to make everything work. i can send a picture of where if you need.

good luck.

Thanks, I installed the fuse and that was fine. Problem is that darn blue wire for the electronic brake controller.

I have a 2000 silverado that I have the same problem. I hooked up my prodigy under the dash next to the steering column and I was getting now power to the unit. I went and looked under the hood and noticed that the 12 v wire was tapped in a bundle with the blue wire. But for the life of me I cannot figure out where to plug the blue wire in. If you figure it out let me know

You may be mixing up model years. pre 2000 there was a read and blue wire taped by the master cyl. The other end was taped under the rear bumper. Neither end was connected to anything. You had to hook each end up to whatever connector you were using the wires for.

New trucks, like yours, just plug the controller harness in. It plugs into the box just to the left, behind the brake pedel. Take the box cover off, there will be an few different plugs but only one that matches the harness plug. Plug it in and your good to go. Off course without the tow package you will have to wire up the 7pin connector from the taped bundle behind the rear bumper.

The fuse mentioned heats up the constant 12v wire for charging the trailers battery.
