Had a leaking water pump gasket on my 03 4.8 at about 50,000 miles and as I recall Chevy replaced it with a different type gasket. Seems to me that the new type gasket was metal of some kind but I did not do the work so am not real sure. The disc brakes were still good at 85,000 when I traded it and except for the water pump gasket nothing went wrong with the pickup. I drove a lot on dirt and gravel roads so the rear brake discs did score but the pads did not seem to wear excessively.
