Vortec 5.3 Question

Having recently replaced my fuel pump my truck is running very well, however I am concerned about a noise it is making when I start my truck when it is cold. (overnight/etc)

It is a squeakish noise that is lasts only a second and occurs until I run the truck long enough. I know this is probably not serious but it annoys me.

Any suggestions?

Check your belts my truck has a small squeek to it when it starts cold as well.

Other than that mak sure it isn't your water pump making the noise that would be bad.

Hi Chestah--Fuel pumps can be very noisy, and still operate OK. A full tank will quiet it down. If the sound still bugs you, turn up the volume on your tunes.--Frank Sub

This noise was present prior to me swapping the new fuel pump, if that matters.

Today I sprayed my belt with some lube to eliminate squeaks. I'll have to see tomorrow morning when I start my truck when it is completely cold.

EDIT: Also the noise doesn't sound like it is coming from underneath my truck, it seems to be coming from inside the hood. This morning if it the noise is there I will pop the hood and try to pinpoint it.

ive been told to never use that squeak free spray stuff, it can cause more bad than good (esp if you get it on things your not supposed to). i tried it and it didnt work, but then m mechanic told me not to use it.

It's been my experience with countless vehicles over the years that if you have several engine drive belts, it usually is the alternator belt that squeals. Typically, tightening the belt a little cures the problem. Do not spray anything on the belt.

Another pitfall to avoid: Stay away from cheap Mexican of Chinese made automotive belts sold by discount parts chains. These belts will stretch constantly causing annoying squealing. Buy a good quality US made belt made by Gates or Good Year and it will give you years of good service.

The 5.3 only uses one belt :banghead:

The newer ones have 2 (at least mine does), not sure why but there is a separate smaller belt for the AC compressor.

Mine is a 2000 and I only know of one belt, but there may be another one?

My belt feels pretty tight, but once again I am gonna have my dad take a look because I'm not quite sure what is tight enough.

I have 93 thousand miles, is that about time to change the belt?

So I guess tomorrow I will check my other belt out.

Where exactly is it located in conjunction to other parts on my truck?

I will checkout this belt to make sure it is not too worn.

Matt, with 93 K and 7 years old, I would suggest you change it. You will likely find small cracks running in the "v portion" of the belt.

Please be sure and spend a little extra money and get a good belt. Gates supplies us (CARQUEST) and IMO they are the best. However, Goodyear and Dayco are great products as well.

The s belt is an easy change and about 25$ if i remember right

Ok so, the serpentine belt is an easy change?

A good gates belt and a little time should have this fixed maybe?
