Tire Pressure Monitor Sensor Rebuild

Recommended Posts

Stopped by Discount Tire this morning to order up the BFG A/Ts and asked some general questions about the tire pressure monitor sensors. The dude helping me mentioned they have a rebuid kit available for the sensors, which includes o-ring(s), valve stem, cap, and maybe something else (it's been a long day!) for $3/tire. I've heard that problems can occure with the valve stems and caps in these systems, and $12 seems like pretty cheap insurance. Just wanted to get some other takes on this.

I had one damaged at discount tire when they put new tires on my wife's minivan. Unfortunately, they would not pay for it so it cost me $70 for a new one. They are pretty simple. They look like a regular valve stem except they have a black plastic block inside the wheel that sits near the tire bead. After seeing the different ones that the Chrysler dealer had, it is no surprise to me that they can get damaged by tire replacement.

The kit includes the oring, cap, and the outer sleeve.

I never liked the fact that they are forcing manufacturers to start using tire monitoring equipment. It is really only to protect the idiots that never check normal maintenance items like tire pressure, oil/coolant level, etc. Just more expensive electronic stuff to fail later. One reason why I avaoided the Autoride option on my Tahoe. Ever price shocks for that option

The discount tire here in Flint MI replaces the sensors if they damage them. I have had them damage 2 on two different vehicles and cost me nothing except to go back when they got them and installed and rebalanced the tires.
