Serpentine Belt mystery

I have a 1990 K2500 with a 6.2L diesel. I got it as surplus from the Navy. It is a barebones truck with low miles and works good. 1 year ago I replaced the serpentine belt, which was very easy, I just installed the new one as the old one was.

We had our first night frost here in Michigan and when I was going to pull out with my truck I had no power brakes nor power steering. I looked under the hood and the serpentine belt had jumped off the pulleys!

When I tried to reinstall it it was 8 inches too long, no matter how I tried to route it. There is no routing label. I have looked for one on the Internet but not found any. Can you show me one and do you have an explanation on what happened? There is no AC and the tensioner is working properly. Belt is in good condition and shows very little wear.

I hate to say it but you have something wrong with the routing. A really cheap belt will stretch some in the first few hundred miles but it will not stretch 8"s.

I cannot help you with the routing but maybe you can find a buddy with the same truck.

You most certainly misrouted the belt. Suggest you get a Haynes manual that covers these diesel engines. There should be belt routing diagram in there.
