the system is great... the Bose speakers can really hit the highs... and my add-on subs/amp are a great compliment to that with deep lows...

BUT....

i dont want to carry around my CD case anymore... ive got a 30gb Video iPod....

wondering if there are any adapters that WORK for it... that charge... let me control from the iPod or steering wheel controls.... and that go to my FACTORY receiver... i really dont want to change the look of the interior with an after market receiver... PLEASE HELP.... it will be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! THANKS!!!!

You can get an adaptor from USA-Spec to Axxess. Go to Crutchfield.com and you'll find what you need.

Ya, you can get the adapter, but IMHO the best way would be to replace that HU with an aftermarket one and get the iPod interface for it. I wanted to keep my factory HU with my iPod, amp and sub upgrades, but it was too much drama especially with XM. I think the adapter costs somewhere around $170.00 from Circuit City. I believe the XM was the one causing all the drama.

I just replaced the factory HU with an Alpine IVA-D310 and added the Alpine iPod interface for it along with the chime and steering wheel control interfaces. I also added the MRA-D550 theater amp for 5.1 surround sound as you can see in the pic, I have the center channel as well. Easily the better way to do it. I don't even need to touch my Nano.

I disagree with the last post. I've owned a couple different MP3 player combinations, including ones that are controlled by a Head Unit (although not an Alpine control)

What makes the iPod so special is the user interface - i.e. it's easy to find your songs in the iPod. So far, other than using my PC, I've found no other solution that is anything except frustrating. I have a 60GB iPod about 2/3 full and my opinion is: what good is carrying all your tunes around if you can't find the dang tune you want to listen to???

You could just let it shuffle everything you have & not worry about it.

Or you could spend hours at your PC ensuring every single disc on your iPod has the correct genre in the id3 tag.

Or, you could do what I did & just get the Aux input into your factory head unit, and get the Dice Electronics ipod cradle (with a cable) and plug your ipod's output straight into the head unit. Then, use the iPod's slick wheel to find your songs. Poof! Best of both worlds.

The cool part is that if you have an ipod video & a NAV head unit, you can get the iPod video to show up on the screen!

I'm dealing with some issues with the OEM radio amp. in my Denali. I've heard that when adding the aftermarket HU, you lose all steering wheel controls, OnStar... Is that true, based on what you posted, you added a component that gave you those functions back?? Can you tell me what I would need to add an aftermarket HU and keep the steering wheel controls, OnStar, Door Chimes etc...

Thanks

That's fine, but how does it sound? I didn't have an AUX input into my factory HU or at least I couldn't find one. Also, I wanted the best quality sound I could get. I mean what's the point of having digital quality music on your iPod if it's coming out sounding like an 8 track?

Go to the PAC audio website and they have all the interfaces you will need to retain all of that. There is one for the door chimes, steering wheel controls, and OnStar. I don't have OnStar, but I do have everything else.

There's like 3 or 4 companies that make aux inputs to go straight into the factory HU through RCA's - and from the iPod's dock connector, not the AV connector (which is supposed to sound better, but I have doubts that it would be any different internally)

Plus, there's no factory harness wire cutting, no jury-rigging mounts, no High-School-Dropout stereo installer doing what he's seen work in his four whole years of experience, etc.

The reason why I'm trying to stay factory is that I've done the $8,000 stereo system in trucks before with all aftermarket stuff, custom installs, etc. And you know what? That truck never missed a beat. But the aftermarket stuff failed on me at various times. I just don't think their design & testing is on the same level as factory at least when it comes to reliability Plus there's the poor connections issue that can come loose over time if not done to spec, etc.

I wouldn't doubt for a second the audio quality of the aftermarket stuff can be better (assuming you don't buy the crappy stuff, and from the photo of your install, I would say you don't). I doubt that the audio quality of aftermarket HEAD UNITS ONLY is noticeably better while you're actually driving down the road (i.e. not in competition). There's NO CONTEST on aftermarket amps & speakers though - which is why I run the factory Head Unit into RF Amps, Focal Separates, and JL Audio subs.

I used to own Reliability Engineering for a Fortune 500 PC/Consumer Electronics company & have seen 1st hand the failures of stuff that we bought off the shelf (from suppliers as well as competitors) vs the stuff that we designed ourselves. And yet on the outside, it all generally pretty much looked the same.

I've also had the high dollar aftermarket head unit serve as eye candy for the punk theives that did a 'smash & grab' because they figured if I dropped $500 to $1,000 on a head unit that they could see, there must be more goodies they couldn't see! The $800 alarm system didn't even slow them down...

Then there's button size / ergonomics, lighting quality, dimming with the dash lights, etc etc etc.

So for me & my experience, I prefer a good factory HU (i.e. Bose with line-level outputs) fed into an awesome set of amps & speaks.

Just my 2 cents - YMMV.

I totally agree with you pretty much on everything you stated. I myself didn't want to change out my factory HU. I liked the way it sounded after I added the 2 10" subs and never would have changed things if it weren't for the stupid iPod plus I got a smokin deal on most of the audio equipment I currently have. All I wanted to do was add my iPod and keep my XM. At that time there was some interface going around that went for something like $170.00 and I actually went and took a look at it, but decided not to do it. The thread was on this board actually and it looked like some big time drama. There were problems wiring it up a certain way and keeping the XM was the biggest problem I believe. So this deal with everything came up and I grabbed it. I don't know which way I would have eventually went if it weren't for the deal I got.

So you see, we think alike. I just happen to think that hard wiring the iPod to the HU is the best route to go (sound quality, and ease of use) and in order to do that, the factory HU needs to be replaced. Being able to control my iPod via the steering wheel is great.

so i ordered the neo car adapter... it should be coming in the 2nd or 3rd of january.... i hope this one works.... because i've tried the USA SPEC adapter... didnt work.... then the Peripheral adapter... didnt work either.... but i have high hopes for this one because the Neo adapter actually has a module for XM equipped vehicles.... and that really has been the problem of those adapters past.... cuz when i installed those previous adapters... there was definite XM interference in the audio output....

ill keep everyone informed on if this adapter does work out or not... thanks watchmesoco for the Neo car adapter info (nanorider.com or mp3yourcar.com)

ok so i got it installed and eveything is working awesome...

this neo car adapter... it does everything i was looking for...

cd quality audio...

charges the ipod...

easy access and maneuverability of the ipod itself and where the connector comes from...

i could put out of the glove box... the center console storage... one of the two center console compartments (i put the connection coming of the bottom one)

it lets me keep control of ipod from the ipod itself and from the steering controls...

let me keep my XM...

all without having to switch to an aftermarket radio......

so i highly recommend this adapter to anyone who is looking to hook up their iPod and keep their factory radio....

i got it from mp3yourcar.com

hopes this helps anyone like it helped me... laters....
