Auto Headlight Woes

Hello all- (I'm new to this forum so be gentle!)

 

I just bought a 2001 GMC 2500 Ex Cab 4x4 a couple of days ago. I learned quickly about the auto headlight feature. And I hate it. I went deer hunting yesterday and couldn't turn the lights off when driving up to hunt. I scared a big buck away first thing because some engineers didn't think this through. Anyways, I did some searching on the forums and I found the little trick with the dome override button, but I can't get it to work. I've tried everything, I've pushed it 2, 3, 4 more times, halfway down, all the way down, everything . . . .and nothing. I read that Canadian vehicles didn't have this trick, is it possible this truck came from Canada? The odometer reads miles and such so I don't think this to be true but ????? The truck also has a remote starter installed (but I have no remote for it), could this affect it? I'm open to any/all suggestion you may have. If possible I would like to be able to just turn AHL off when needed, but if I had to choose between always on and always off I would rather disable them altogether. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

2001 & 02 can be disabled by pushing the dome button 3 times but resets every time you shut off ign.

Remote starter cannot affect headlights but might cause other headaches.

wonder if you just un plug the sensor if that would cure it. My friend did it on his s10 by bypassing a relay in the dash some where. Or you know what would be cool i wonder if you could put the new style headlamp switch in your truck my 04 has a off side to the switch?

Be careful disabling the system some states are making new laws that require lights on at dusk & when you use wipers. Could get you a ticket you don't want.

Just unplugging won't work. You need to put the 1.5k ohm resistor in it's place.

Thats true you just need to put in a resistor in place of the light sensor on the dash. Takes about 10mins, I just did mines today because my Hid kit is coming in this week. Just remove the radio and push the light sensor into the dash and unclip it and plug each end of the resistor in the harness (theres only two prongs) and there u go. I tried putting the light sensor back in place but my hands are lil big haha so kinda fell inside the dash somewhere. Thought I could use it later on if needed to but I guess I got to order it if I need it anytime soon
