Fold A Cover or Advance Folding Cover

Recommended Posts

I have an '06 Crew Cab and I thought the ARE LSll Cover was the answer for my needs and although it looks great it is not as functional (as I've found out) for me or my busy family as it spends more time off then on (it's For Sale in the marketplace  )

So I am looking to buy a locking easy off and on folding cover and have narrowed down my choices to the Fold A Cover and the Advance Folding Cover as my 2 options.

To me they look almost the same in functionality and features so I figured I would ask for input from those who already have them.

TIA for your input :driving:

I looked at both versions of the folding cover before I bought mine. I ended up buying the advance folding cover, which is an improved version of the original folding cover. The advance cover has better weather seals, and most importantly, every panel is automatically latched to the bed when you close the cover, which is not the case with fold-a-cover. As a result, fold-a-cover inner panels can get partially lifted by the wind while driving, which cannot be a good thing.

The funny thing is, I have not installed my advance cover yet, it is still in the box, as I am toying with an idea of getting a camper shell instead. I bought my advance cover from truckchamp.com. Reasonable price and free shipping. I also bought a bed rug to go along with the cover.

I tried the cover on my truck just to see if it would fit, and it fits nice. It is pretty light too - about 20 lbs.

Check the features of both covers on these sites:

Thanks for the input :driving:

I had not heard that about the FAC panels partially lifting

Looks like I will go w/the Advance Cover based on that information.

Just spent 20 minutes on the phone w/FAC and they said that they had a "few" calls on panels lifiting during highway driving but it was due to incorrect installation of the "C Clamps :driving: "

In any event they went on to say that a newly designed model of the FAC will be on the market sometime in Q1 of 2007 that has more C clamps, better locking mechanisims, and an improved panel design.

I've used a Fold-A-Cover for four years now, on two different trucks. During that time, it's traveled many thousands of miles and has never given me one lick of problems.

If I had to replace my rig tomorrow, I would buy a brand-new Duramax and you can absolutely, positively bet that it would have a Fold-A-Cover on it.

I own the Fold A Cover that GM sells through the dealer. I have had no problems even in the 45 mph winds yesterday...it never lifted out. Never a problem. I highly recommend it.

When I bought the truck new, it had the Fold-a-Cover preinstalled on the truck. The keys in the locks would not come out. I called the dealer and they gave me the runaround. Then I called Fold-A-Cover and kindly asked if I could buy a new set. They said that they made the cover for GM and that they would always stand behind their product. They sent me a new set of locks with removing keys - FREE and UPS NEXT DAY!

I have nothing but good things to say about those kind folks....and bad things about the GM dealer who didn't give a damned about me after the sale.

SOLD my ARE today and went straight out and bought the Advance Cover and had it installed.

Below are my thoughts on it:

-The lock closest to the tailgate is hard to work – installing dealer told me it would eventually get better

- The surface surrounding the lock scratches very easily

- The small rubber flap that overlaps the tailgate does not seem very protective of stopping water?

- The slide lever on the back leaves a gap which looks like it would allow water to get into the bed

- The last 2 surprised me with what they did to seal the joints and the sides

Did you leave the side bed caps on? If so, how did they mount the black moulding on top of the caps? Did they just stick them on or actually used the small supplied screws (which I think is a bad idea)?

Left the side bed caps on, and put the black molding on top of it (adhesive) no screws

Thanks,

That's what I will probably do if I ever decide to mount this thing. I wish you had talked to me bafore you bought the cover. Mine is still brand new in a box and maybe I would have sold it at a very attractive price (much less than you paid, guaranteed).

BTW, I called the advancecover.com and they sent me an extra weather seal which I would stick on top of the front bed panel (behind cab) to keep water out. The small flap does not look like the best design for this purpose.

I sent Advance Cover an email today as I didn't see a number listed on their website?

Can you post a picture of what they sent you please?

I will want to put one on the back and front to keep out water as with the rain we had yesterday the flap at the tailgate did not stop anything as I had puddles in the bed near the tailgate

    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
    • Correct.  2019-2021 model years are serviced by a different p/n.  19420611.  Recall 2021s use 19420611.   The recall engines 2022-2024 model years are serviced with 12740076.     The difference between 19420611 and 12740076 is GM changed injector size for 2022.  The injectors are smaller on 12740076 with smaller injector bores in the cylinder heads to match the smaller injectors.  So you can't install a 19420611 in a 2022-2024, and you can't install a 12740076 in a 2019-2021.     Both engines are the replacement engine p/ns that are in the L87 recall.  So both of these are the updated engines.     Here's a version of the L87 recall with the p/ns for all the parts needed.    RCRIT-25V274-7075.pdf   Note it shows 19420611 and 12740076 with an asterisk to a footnote "Use the VIN and the GM Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to determine which part to order if two or more part numbers are listed for the same part, as it may vary by vehicle options."
