Tire Chains

after being stuck on black ice, 12" of packed snow, etc. time has come for chains.

anybody use spider spikes? or regualr chains on their truck?

Never used spider spikes. Looks to me like they would work in a pinch. I'd question their durability if you start doing some serious digging or put a lot of strain on your tires.

 

reqular chains otoh I've used tons of times.

 

Depends on what you plan on needing chains for. If you just occasionally need them for ice on the highway you could get by with a set of cable chains. A standard set of chains from any tire store or wal-mart would handle just about anything most people will run into. Some styles are easier to put on than others. Just make sure you get the bungees to keep them tight.

 

I have to deal with deep snow/mud so I've got some pretty big diameter hardened steel mud chains. Not cheap but once I put them on I don't get stuck Hard to find stores that sell them.

 

Just remeber that with chains on you are limited in how fast you can go. also make sure they don't flop around and tear off your brake lines.
