TOYO tires ?????

you can go faster with P metrics, also, and I dont know why, maybe I'm missing something, but when you look at the max wieght capacity on the sidewall for the tire the p metric vs the LT , the p metric has a higher weight capacity

I just took off a set of Toyo Open Countrys and replaced them with BFG AT's. 285's in both cases, mounted on the stock 6.5" aluminum rims. The BFG's definitely ride a lot smoother. The guys at Bell Tire here in Michigan were surprised I would replace the Toyo's with BFG's. The tire tech told me he's only heard good things about the Toyo's.

But I saw a truck like mine at the gas station a few months back and it had 285 Toyo's on it just like my truck had. Talked to the owner, hoping to find that he really liked them. He didn't. He had made the opposite switch, from BFG's to Toyo's. He said he liked the BFG's better and was sorry he didn't just put a new set of BFG's on.

So I had a real testimonial, from this guy at the gas station, and a vested-interest "testimonial" from the guys at the tire store. I bought the BFG's. Ver-r-ry nice ride, equivalent or better handling, less tire noise.

Also, LT tires are de-rated by 15% because they're being used on a truck where more abuse from rocky trails, heavy loads, etc., is expected. So if you un-de-rate an LT tire, it's load capacity is probably the same as the P-metric tire.

I'd never put P-metric's on my truck.

I've had LT265 75 R16 Toyos open country A/Ts on my tahoe for a couple years, and they wear and handle well, no complaints. Main reason I got them is that they were the cheapest name brand I could find. I've run BFG ATs on previous vehicles and they are a great tire, a bit louder in my opinion which would be expected with more aggressive tread, but better offroad traction. I just wasn't willing to pay 200+ more to have the BFGs.

Scott, I over researched the P & LT thing before buying and for my use, I decided on the P tires. I just could not give up the ride the Ps offer compared to LTs. I am sure there is not a tremendous difference but most people will tell you the LTs are stiffer. Remember, there are different ratings in LTs also and some of them are 80 PSI tires that will be very stiff. I have also read arguments that the LTs will decrease your MPG due to the increased weight. I cannot say this is true or not.

I found a Bridgestone Dueler HL Alenza that had a higher weight rating than any other P series I could find. Not much more but it gave me a little more "wiggle room" for my camper tounge weight. They are premium tires and you will pay for them but they made my Yukon XL seem new again. They are very quiet and smooth. They are rated # 1 or 2 on Tire Racks webs site right next to the Goodyear Fortera Triple tread.

Although I have heard good things about Toyo Tires and would not be afraid of them.

I ran a set of Toyo Open Conrty A/T's on my old truck and i wasnt too impressed with them. I wont buy them again.

The biggest issue i had with them was tread life. 34k is just unacceptable in my opinion. They wore bald in the center in that 34k. The tires were 265/75 16 mounted on an 8" rim. Everythig was right and i ran the pressure 5psi below the max rating of 40 the entire time so they werent overinflated. My tire guy told me that wearing in th ecenter is common with them just like it is with the BTG all terrain. He said its just the way they are built they tend to bluge in the center. I never had an issue with traction with the Toyo's and they were very quiet but like i said they wore quickly and killed gas milage bigtime.

I replaced them with uniroyal cross counrty's. not an at tire but they wore great, rode great and were fine in the snow. I got 50k out of them when i traded the truck, they still looked like new.

If i wss getting an At tire today it would be the michelin ltx AT. I had them in the past and they were super. I put close to 100k on a set and couldnt wear them out and the traction was awesome.

"P" is for "Passenger car" and "LT" is for "Light Truck"....so obviously a tire marked LT is what belongs on a full size pickup truck.

Having said that, if you don't haul or tow heavy loads you can get away with using P-rated tires. The OEM tires are P-rated because that helps them achieve the fuel economy ratings they need to satisfy the government.

LT tires will lower your fuel mileage. I've seen that firsthand. But if you use your truck off-road or if you tow or haul much LT tires are what you should be running. Just depends on your usage really.

I'll never put Yokahama or Toyo tires on my AMERICAN truck. I realize that other manufacturers might manufacture outside the US but at least BFG, Firestone, Goodyear, etc sound like good AMERICAN tires for an all American truck.

Cooper tires are made in the USA by an American corporation. Excellent tires.

I switched from P to LT tires, and noticed absolutely no difference in gas mileage. I don't do any stop & go driving though, so that could make a difference.

After the experience I had with P rated tires on my truck, I'd never put them back on. Only LT now.

I have the Michelin LTX A/T on my truck. They are great tires! Hopefully mine won't quite last 100,000 miles because I want to put 285s on my truck and I just can't stand to buy new tires if the current tires are still good. Hmm... wonder what kind of money I could get for them used???
