wrong oil filter?

i changed my oil on my '03 sierra V8. Come to find out the filter I put on the truck last oil change was about 1/2 to 3/4" longer than the filter i just bought. Would that have messed up my engine? Both filters went on with ease, so I'm pretty sure i didn't strip any threads. It was the same brand filter i bought last time. And there isn't any leakage. Thank you

Was it an AC filter?

Engine damage: doubtful especially if your oil pressure gauge showed the normal value.

With different manufacturers, there could be enough structural variance as to how the guts of the filter are put together, resulting in slightly different external dimensions.

Most people on this forum will agree that one should spend a few extra bucks and get a good quality oil filter (several threads have discussed this in great detail). When you spread the extra cost over the thousands of miles you get out of the oil between changes, you'll see the cost difference is insignificant [aside from that particular day you buy the filter, when you could perhaps get a Happy Meal for that].

It was a Fram Tough Guard.

By the way you can get much better filters (or atleast as good) than Fram for less. Just FYI.

Oh, yeah. I saw some AC Delco filters at Pep Boys for around $4.00. The last time we got an oil filter for our Suburban, it was a NAPA Gold for $5.80 or so.

One could have been the Fram equivalent of the AC Delco PF46 (short) and the other the Fram equivalent of the AC Delco PF61 (long).

If that's the case, either one is OK (if we're talking about a 5.3 liter V8).
