3.08 gears

Allright, here's my truck...

99 Silverado 4.3L V6 2wd Shortbed

It currently has 3.08's ...i wanna go to 3.73's.

I know you need to tune the computer to accept 3.73's...not a problem.

Here's my questions:

1.) If i have my mechanic do it, can i drive it home (8 miles) without major problems? (I know the speedo/abs light may go off)

2.) Do i just need the ring/pinion gear? or a whole new carrier?

It would be about 10x easier to just go to a salvage yard and buy an entire rear end with the gears you need.

You can do that install with simple hand tools in an afternoon.

Well, I made a similar suggestion in response to a similar inquiry about a year ago and some attacked that idea as being really worthless. I do not see why because rear ends often survive the rest of the vehicle in very good condition and often late model vehicles that are wrecked in the front or side, have perfectly good rear axle assemblies that can be bought cheap.

I wonder if they would give you any trade in credit on the old rear end? Also, what kind of prices would you guys expect in order to buy a rear end?

Let me ask a question that goes along with the original. If you go to the junkyard and get a rear end, do you have to stay with the same type of brakes as the original rear end? If I have drum brakes do I have to keep those brakes or can I get a rear end with disc brakes and have it be okay?

Also, don't forget that you can find a 3.73 rear end with a locker pretty easy while you are doing the upgrade.

Might have proportioning issues with different brakes... I would definately go with a junk yard axle though. Need to start hunting for one around here with 4.10's...

Anybody with a 4x4 want to swap my 3.73's for your 4.10's?
