Looking to buy a 06 low miles 2500, 4x4, 8.1 SB Crew.

Any problems w/ this motor? Who has the most miles on one? I had a 02, but only ran it to 36k, steppin out of 05 Duramax, cant stand diesel. Was going to order new 2007 6.0, but Im thinking wont be enough to tow my 10k lb boat well.

Opinions?

Thanks

I GOT 65,000 ON MY 8.1L AND I HAVEN'T HAD ON PROBLEM. I AM ALSO A WARRANTY CLAIMS ADMINISTRATOR AND IN 4 YEARS I HAVE SEEN BARLEY ANY CLAIMS ON THE 8.1L ENGINES...THE ONLY THING YOU WILL SEE IS IT BURNS OIL ABOUT 2QUARTS EVERY 3 TO 5 THOUSAND MILES ONCE IT IS BROKEN IT. PRETTY NORMAL FOR A BIG BLOCK.

That's the rig that I am also looking for. Good luck trying to find one. The closet one to me is over 200 miles away!

If your interested , there is a brand new 06 here in Cali for 36k out the door(ca sales tax &DMV). Im sure they could ship it to you. Call Joe Mac @ Simi Valley GMC and tell him Brian sent you. Its pewter & SLE2 w/ cloth

The guy who has the most I know of goes by Camper Hauler on The Diesel Place. Here's a recent quote;

"I've owned both and you couldn't give me another duramax. It may not use more fuel then the 8.1 but it sure takes more dollar bills out of your pocket then the 8.1. My 8.1 has 191,000 and still going strong. At this mileage with the duramax I was on my second engine and 3rd injector job. GM sure screwed up by not offering it in the new pickup."

Mine has 91,000 and is as reliable a vehicle as I've ever owned.

Mine is an '05 and I get ~4,000+ miles to a qt of oil. Runs great. It's +5F out right now and I just had to run my wife down to a friend's house 2/10's of a mile away and will have to pick her up in 2 hrs. I was driving there and back and actually thinking..... I'm glad my truck is a gasser. Starts up easy in this cold, warms up fast. If it was a diesel I'd be worrying about very short, cold runs like this..... especially in this hilly terain. I've got a diesel tractor that I snowblow with in the winter and I have to put an additive in the fuel so it doesn't gel. I don't like having to worry about that. Not difficult, just a PITA. All my other rigs and equipment are gas. It's just easier for me.

80K on mine. Only problems so far have beens self-destructing a/c compressor and p/s pump, but zero prolems with the motor. Uses about about a qt of oil every 3K miles. My mechanic overfills by 1/2 qt so it's only a 1/2 qt low when it's time for the next oil change.

I just bought a new '06 with 8.1 and love it. I test drove LBZ Duramax's and 8.1's and it's no comparison. The 8.1 leaves Duramax in the dust and is much more spirited and fun to drive. (however it is thirsty!!)

You might want to consider buying new. The incentives for '06 gassers are up to $5500. I got my new '06 Sierra Ext/LWD 4X4 SLT loaded for about $30k out the door.

My other option was a new style with LMM Duramax (since 8.1 is EOL) but the price would have been close to $50k.

The best deal on a crew like yours is 36k OTD, but I found and 06 w/ 9k miles on it for 28k. sle2, 4wd,crew,

seems like a decent deal, but right around mid blue book?

actually the truck I found was a 04 I don't think any new ones are any closer. The wife still isn't convinced on the 8.1L yet, she'd rather have a tahoe.... :banghead: I gotta work on that.

My uncle had a 2002 Crew Cab with the 8.1L. He had over 260,000 miles on it when he sold it. The only reason that he sold it was because he got into an accident and it messed up the Allison. They said it would cost around 4K to fix it so he had to sell the truck for lack of money. I hear that the guy that owns it has over 300,000 on it now and there have been no problems. :banghead:

Why is oil consumption justified as being "it's a big block". To me a new or newer vehicle with under 100k miles should not use one drop of oil.

I supposed if your aware of it it's ok, just wondering.

Based on what I've seen on my 05 and other threads on this forum, the oil use issue on the 8.1's seems to have been mostly resolved in the newer models, at least 05 & up. I can't speak for the 04's.
