I am buying a new GMC truck and currently drive a 05 Yukon. I am in sales for Caterpillar and put alot of miles on a truck I went to the dealer he gave me a 2007 1500 loaded to drive for a day and it has the 5.3 crew cab Z71. They have some 07 2500 HD with Duramax engines on the lot. I have been thinking about a diesel for quite some time because of the milage and the aftermarket toys for it. I can buy with all the discounts ect. the 2500 for about the same price as or cheaper than the 1500 5.3 but I dont do alot of heavy towing. Which truck should I buy I like the inside of the older truck better and the shorter size of the 1500 better what to do the 2500 is bad and I have never owned a diesel before but my customers swear by them they get 20 miless to a gallon once it is chipped and all the other toys added. would the 2500 ride good on highway will I get the milage they say .

Please help

Do you need 4x4? Do you have passengers during all this mileage?

Doesn't the 07 1500 Z71 with the 5.3v8 engine have a mpg of 16-20mpg? Gas is a lot cheaper than diesel where I live...

If you don't carry passengers with you everyday try the 1500 Silverado Extended cab with the 5.8, 6.5ft or 8ft bed...

And while you're at it look at the new 07 Toyota Tundra with the 6spd auto tranny...I looked at one yesterday and WOW!

I too had the same dilemna. I chose the 1500 and couldn't be happier.

As for the person who recommended the Tundra,

keep buying foreign so we can all be out of jobs, I don't buy that bulls**t that Toyota is American based, the profits ultimately go back to Tojo. Remember that.

Ok...getting back to the original question...

A 1500 will ride far better on the highway unloaded than any 2500 would. The 2500 and 3500 models are designed more for heavy loads and have larger towing capacities. Probably too much truck for what you need.

The 5.3L is probably best in class for gas mileage (my 4wd CC 5.3L is rated 20mpg hwy), it's quiet, has tons of power. Unless you are doing heavy towing or hauling heavy loads...stick with the 1500.

I would say go with the 1500 also, I just traded my 2004 2500HD Duramax 4x4 for a 2007 new body style 1500 4x4, the reason I traded it was because I only drove 14 miles a day total to and from work and the diesel will not get up to operating temp with those short trips, I dont tow anymore as I sold my boat last year, maintance cost is a little high and looking for fuel got to be a pain when I drove to differant places. I took the diesel down to the dealer about a month ago and was in the garage with the guy when he changed the oil (85 dollars) and there was a little bit of water just traces in the oil wasnt antifreeze, he ask me if the truck was driven alot and I said no it only has 20,000 miles on it and its 3 years old and he said what is happing is that your short trips and not getting the motor up to temp is not burning the condesation out of the motor and some of the moisture is setteling on the oil and keeps building over time , all motors do it but short trips on a diesel is harder on a diesel then a gas as a gas motor heats up alot faster and gets rid of the moisture. Now that iam back in a gas motor I forgot what its like to hit the pedal and go then to wait for the turbo to build pressure and go. When I had to shoot out in traffic with the diesel I had to hold the brake and bring the rpm's up to about 1500-2000 smash the pedal and let off the brake at the same time cause of the turbo lag. Iam not bad mouthing the truck as it wasnt its fault it was mine for not driving it more and working it harder like they should.

Unless you're towing alot, i'd definitely go with the new 1500. The obs duramax's are great rigs and are strong as an ox, but they also ride like an ox cart. My uncle has an 05 and my dad's company has a 06. We've had well over 20,000lbs on both of them multiple times with no problems, but the ride is just unecessarily rough imo. My uncle says that with some weight in the back they ride alot better though. I'm sure you can get the 1500 a little cheaper than the dmax also if you haggle a bit.

Wow, a Duramax for the same price as the 1500! I would take the Duramax in a minute. I think that you stated that you drive alot of miles. The Duramax is capable of alot of power. A guy that I know had his dynoed last year, 1407 to the ground(he used it as a pulling truck). He had to detune it as he could not keep u-joints in it. At least try the Duramax before you buy. Part of the hard ride is in the tires. I had a 1500 HD with the E rated tires and it rode hard. When I put regular tires it rode good. Good luck.

Both trucks are capable of having mega miles put on them with very few problems.

The HD will ride rougher, but a little weight in the bed helps out.

If the price is the same, and you don't mind the rougher ride then I think it's a no brainer to buy the Dmax. The reason I say this is that in 4 years from now when you are looking for another truck, the Dmax with 125K miles on it will have close to twice the resale value of the 1/2 ton truck!

The MPG's between the 2 rigs will be about the same so your fuel costs will be a little higher with the Dmax because diesel tends to run about $0.20/gallon more. Oil changes for the Dmax are a little more expensive, but the change interval for the Dmax is about twice that of a gasser.

I've been looking for a 07 Sierra Denali Classic and not haven't good luck. There is only two in Ontario. One is a demo and the other the dealer don't want to give it up on a locate. So my dealer can get me a 07 new style with the 6.0, NAV, Sunroof, DVD, etc. Plus it has all the stepbars, tonneau, bedrug, and all the GM chrome accessories. I wasn't quite sure so they gave me a 5.3 SLT for the weekend. It's a pretty nice truck. The heated washer fluid is a big plus for winter and the factory remote start. So far I'm getting 18 mpg in the city. It tells you when it's running on 4 cyls, and you can't tell the swith over to 8 cyls. Aesome ride and handling. GM has a winner with this, they just got to get the 6.2 across the whole line to compete with Toyota's monster.

The 1500 is going to have a smoother ride. Hands down.

What kind of climate do you live in? If it's a cold climate, the gasser is a start and drive, the diesel....well, it takes quite a while before you get any devent heat. Many have installed remote starters and run for 20-30 minutes before driving off in the morning. Kind off goes against the mpg advantage and then of course theirs all the extra greenhouse gases from letting it run so long every day.

Depending on how you dirve, you might get a little better mileage with the diesel, than the 5.3, but on the highway it will be close.

And of course, it depends on how big your ego is.

Buy whatever you like or want.

Just Enjoy.

This is a no brainer. go with the Duramax. Same if not better fuel mileage, they look better and on top of that, you can drop in a $500 programmer and run 13's in the quarter!! A single programmer and you can have 450hp at the crank. Mine dyno'd at 357hp at the wheels and I only had my juice on level 4 and no other real mods. Duramaxs are insanely fast! Its like driving a suped up sports car around.

$500 + $6000 for the diesel.
