Differential Failure ?

Hey guys I investigated a chatter coming from the "rear end" the other day. I found metal in the oil so i decided to take the diff cover off. I found nothing noticeably wrong with the gear and pinion but the Diff had a pin that looked like it was mauled to hell. Take a look and give me an idea of what i need to replace. If it is the diff how do i determine the gear ratio and what not of the truck? It is a 2000 sierra 1500 4x4 with ext cab. Thanks for any help in advance.

Will post pictures soon!

Sounds like maybe the pins for the locker have been destroyed, assuming that you have a locker (G80 is the RPO code....check your glove box for the codes).

The last picture where the "pin" i guess would be a good name for it is coming out the bottom and that thing is all chipped away and it looks like it slammed hard on the case that houses it making a oval size whole instead of a perfect circle.....

The locking unit is designed to operate as an open diff if there's a mechanical problem with it. I'd probably just get it replaced, either with another Eaton or you can get something like Detroit or some other limited slip. A full locker wouldn't really be good on a primarily street truck.

That "PIN" also retains the diff. side gears, there should have been a retaining bolt that holds it in place. Looks like the bolt broke or backed itself out. You have, or had the G80 Eaton locker option. If the holes in the case are elongated, the case is trashed and needs to be replaced.:confused:
