Carfax Odometer Question

I am looking at 03 1500HD. The carfax report has a discrepancy in the mileage. One date states 60,000. The next date states 6,381. Carfax says this could be a clerical error or a possible odometer rollback. Can these odometers in these trucks be rolled back? If not, can it be swapped out and if it was swapped out, can you tell if it was? Thanks in advance!

I would look back at previous state inspection/registration records and see if you really do have a roll-back. It is possible to roll back the 800's. It almost sounds like a typo. I think they meant to to say 6000 then 6381.

Maybe not rolled back, but I could see where a computer change or dashboard replacement could result in an odometer reset. However none of the mileages given really make sense for the age of the truck - I would expect an 03 to have between 45-65000 miles - depending on the exact date the truck was new so to have either 60,000 or 6000 miles in two years is either way to many or way to few, and 23000 now would indicate that in 05 something was reset or turned back. Maybe they swapped computer modules from a used truck with only 6381 mi.

My 02 has 68k miles. My friends 05 has 71k. It really could go either way.

If we put in 6000 miles on the 28th, wouldn't it make sense if the truck traveled 381 miles in 3 days?

And yes, the odometers on these trucks can be messed with. They are basic computers that can be reprogrammed. It simply doesn't look like that is the case here. Someone made a typo and added an extra 0.

You should be able to tell if the truck has 23000 miles on it now or it has 123000 miles. Go out and take a look at it.

Ouch, let's cut the guy some slack...

What you are saying about the 381 miles does make sense, but there is a possibility of some deception going on. A dishonest seller could use the "clerical error" to hide the truth.

I would do some more digging on this vehicle. 23K on an 2003 is not unheard of, but is extremely low for the year. When was the truck first privately titled? Is this a local vehicle that you are looking at? If so, find a competent mechanic or shop, and pay for an inspection, and to have the ECM scanned. Maybe they can spot something that you are having trouble seeing. Have you talked directly to the original vehicle owner? Did they live close to work, or was this a weekend only vehicle? How do the brake and accelerator pedals look? Original tires yet?

It's very possible this is indeed a clerical error, but a little more investigating can't hurt. Better to learn the truth now than after purchasing it.

This truck is about 500 miles away from me. I haven't looked at it yet. I believe it was worth looking at a Carfax report before putting the time into driving to see it. Just wanted to get some opinions and info here whether this would be worth a trip to see it or not. Thanks for all input.

It's not the odometers that are 800's, that's the particular series/production run of trucks.

I might consider passing on it if you ever plan on selling it. The discrepancy in the carfax report will likely make it hard for you to sell in the future, and could bring its value way down.

VERY true, unless you can somehow correct the report or get a significant discount from the seller due to the error and 'possible' fraud.
