Question About Motor

Ok, so the truck I bought last year, well, I was out working on it with my uncle today and he was looking at the belt drive system, you know, the belt that goes on the alternator, the fan, power steering pump, crankshaft pulley, and all...etc. Well he was looking at the aircleaner and he notices that the aircleaner doesn't line up with the air system, the tube piece that goes toward the right side front fender, and has attachment pieces, bolted to the wheel well, ok, so the aircleaner sits lower than it should, and it sits right on the wires that connect to the coil, not the plug wires, but the connector wires that connect to the coil to give the plug wires power to give the plugs spark, well that hits and the engine tag says its a 5.7 liter, but its not, the motor in this truck, I don't know if it is the original motor that is in it, but does anyone know how I can find the year of this motor? I need to do that, because it has the wrong length belt for belt system, and I can't do anything more to this truck until I figure out what year this motor is and I also need the parts for fuel and stuff, to get it running, but right now I need to figure out what year this motor is, because the person I bought this truck from told me that the motor in the truck was out of a corvette, which the corvette motors are what they put in the gm trucks anyway, but I think this motor is a different year, and that is what I want to figure out, so if anyone could help me out here, I would really appreciate it a lot. Please help me, I really want to get my truck running bad...!

Can't tell you about the motor year, but if you run a string along the belt route and measure the string you will have your belt length. Can you see any kind of stamp or anything on the block?

there is like a vin number on the manifold, I'm not talking about the firing order numbers, but behind back by the coil, there is like a vin number on the manifold, and its 14102182, but I want to ask, where is the stamp on the block at? Where do I look for that, and would I be able to see it from under the truck if I crawled under the front and looked or would I be able to see it from the top under the hood? where is the stamp located at on the block?

That's a part number for the manifold (googled it). I don't know if or where there would be a stamp, but it's worth a look...figure there must be some kind of ID on it.

Alright, tomorrow I'm going out to look for the vin number for the motor. I was told that the vin number for the motor is on the block, in the back. Now where exactly do I need to look for this number? Where will I be able to see it from the best, under the truck or under the hood above? I can't pull it out because I don't have a cherry picker to do that, so I have to find the number with the motor mounted in the truck. Just need adive of where to look exactly for this vin number for the motor. I am going to search the vin number and find out what year this motor is.

I've killed way too many brain cells...I think it's on the pass side of the block down by the freeze plugs. I would look low anyway, under the truck. Also, a decent parts guy is going to be able to help you, these mouse motors run in generations basically, pre tbi, tbi, vortec etc. Hope this helps.

OK, here we go: 91 and 92 Chevys, 92 Oldsmobiles, and 91 Pontiacs had these manifolds, camaro, p/u, etc.

The block casting number on smallblock and big block Chevy V-8 motors is located on a ledge found at the rear of the block, most often on the driver's side. This ledge is below the deck of the block and the ledge forms the mating surface between the block and the transmission bellhousing. Some of the later model blocks have the casting number on the passenger side of this ledge. The number itself can have 6, 7 or 8 numeral digits. They might look like this "361959" or "3970010" or "14015445". The block casting numbers do not have any letters in them. There are sometimes individual letters found on blocks like "GM" or "CFD" for the Central Foundry Division, but they are not part of the block casting number. Also some of the later blocks have the size of the motor shown in liters. You may see a "5.0" (305) or "5.7" (350) cast on the rear ledge of a smallblock or a "7.4" on the side of a big block 454. On the side of some later blocks the last three digits of the block casting number are cast into the block, but these are difficult to see when the engine is in a vehicle.

The engine assembly date is a "stamped in" code that is stamped into the metal as opposed to a "raised" casting. These date codes are can be found in a number of locations on the block, but most often are found on a ledge that is visible when the motor is assembled. This ledge is found on the passenger side of the block deck at the front. If your alternator is on the passenger side of the motor, the ledge on the block deck is right below it. You may have to move the alternator to be able to read this engine assembly code. Some blocks have the engine assembly code on a flat portion of the block above the timing cover mating surface on the front of the block.

Hope this helps a little more...

That info from superbee looks right to me (its valid for about everything back to the 70s actually).

After 10 years though in my experiance one thing or another will be obscuring your view of the block casting numbers

If you're lucky it wont be covered in dust and road gunk... but it probably will be... just get your shop light in there and rub stuff off the ledge until you find where it's stamped.

Yea, thank you superbee, and everyone else that replied to help. oh, my alternator is on the driver side, left side. So, is the stamp right below, behind that, or is it elsewhere. This truck I got is a 1988 Silverado, and the motor, i dunno what year it is, but if someone could, look up the 327 motor for what years it was made to from the first year it was built, to whenever. I would really appreciate it.

Alright, hey everyone, I am going out to look for that vin number on the block of the motor, I'll let you know if I find it, or not, but also, I know its wet a little back by my truck, so I dunno if I am going to crawl under it.
